our welsh mountain pony came down with colic today. we found him in he paddock rolling and he wouldnt get up for an hour and looked really ill. by the time the vet arrived he managed to get up and walk up to the yard. he had diahorrea/sloppy poo down his tail.
vet gave him an injection and left. pony is now in stable. has had a bit of haylage but at moment stood still with cold wet sweat patches over his flanks. he hasnt pooped for 8 hrs now and u can hear his belly gurgling.
he was wormed 3 weeks ago but vet thinks thats not linked. we changed haylage 3 weeks ago too, and is good haylage but alot drier than they were used to.
any wisdom?
not sure what type of colic it could be?
hes not recovered yet. so abit worried still.

Is he still uncomfortable, trying to roll or digging? What time did the vet inject him as you need to keep an eye on him when the painrelief wears off in case you need the vet back. If you can hear his belly gurgling that is usually a good sign that something is happening and he is not totally blocked up.
If he is cold have you got a fleece rug he could have on he would feel better if his back is kept warm.
Keep checking on him and if he gets worse phone the vet, I have called mine at 3am, they are used to it and will come out if you are worried, colic is not nice to deal with there are so many causes that it is often difficult to know why they get it.
I hope he is feeling better soon.

thankfully he is looking alot better, he did about 5 poos overnight so is in a little paddock next to the house now. he looks a little hesitant when walking so not quite right but yesterday i thought he was gona die, so im very relieved.
we lost a pregnant mare 3 weeks ago to redworm so completely panicked this time. i could hardly speak to the vet for crying cos i thought he was gona die too. he reckoned it was not related to worms/worming. i think he may have just gorged on haylage which is drier than they are used to.
when i can i relax about him - 48hrs? or is it likely to return. only had 2 very mild cases of colic before, many years back but not with this pony.

I am so pleased to hear he is feeling better this morning, keep his food intake restricted a little and make sure he is drinking well, in the cold weather they often eat more but do not then take enough fluids so can get a bit dehydrated and then colic due to impaction.
Keep a close eye on him but if it was due to gorging provided he does not do that again it will hopefully be just a one off.
