My rising 4 yo has just come back from the vets after having peritonitis for the last 4 weeks and he was scoped yesterday.

It showed Abundant hyperkeratosis and scarring of the stomach and also squamous ulcers leasding into the intestines

He also has glandular ulcers, which apparently youg horses get. we are waiting for lung fluid to be tested at the lab to see if that may have been a factor in all of this as it came out looking like dish water.

So the long and short is, which of the three supplements would people recommend. I have spoken to Kate H's mum who has been extremely helpful. Just wondered about the U Gard and Neigh Lox. Anyone else had this with their young horse.

Poor boy has been so poorly the last month. He will do anything to get out of going to Boarding School

If he's insured then I'd start with GastroGuard.

I use Coligone liquid & U Gard, though the Coligone is more to deal with ongoing gas problems. The U Gard definately keeps him more comfortable but it wasn't enough to cure his ulcers, for that I needed GastroGuard.

I had my TB treated with Gastrogard (was scoped for and diagnosed with ulcers after a nasty bout of peritonitis) and then followed up with U Gard on vets recommendations. Touch wood, never had another flare up in 18 months. I also put him on Pink Powder which seemed to settle down his digestion nicely. My vets also recommended Neighlox as an alternative to U Gard but I was able to pick up U Gard locally so went with that.

Hope he's feeling a bit better now?

A word of warning - Although Coligone is always highly recommended, my lad hated the taste of it (we had the powder) so was a waste of money! He is however happy with u-guard and would also recommend pink powder.
Good luck!

Mine hated the powder but loves the liquid. You can get the liquid in 500ml bottles so you can try a small amount soon & I'm sure if you contacted Kate (H's Mum on here) & asked nicely she'd send you a sample of the powder to try.

I cannot rate Hilton Herbs Gasti- X highly enough, had my boy on it for a couple of months and he is like a different horse. He’s back on pink powder now as the bulk of the issues seem to have cleared up.

There are so many thinks out there that help but as I keep being told time and time again that Gastro Guard is the best and the ONLY thing that will fully cure them. :(

What have your Vets said have they said he needs to be on Gastrogard??

My boy suffers Ulcers none of the supplements mentioned will cure however they may help. The only one with heavy scientific research behind it is Neighlox, Saracen where great & emailed me all the extensive research done with Neighlox. I have used it & found it really does help however it is expensive however it does go a very long way so if you can afford the initial outlay it does work out not that expensive in the long run.

I can't afford the initial outlay for Neighlox atm & recently after talking to my Vets they recommended Settlex by feedmark, apparently it has all the ingredients that Neighlox does barr one i think. How important that 1 ingredient is i don't know, but im in the process of starting with Settlex so hopefully it will be just as good. Only thing i don't like is it's a powder & Neighlox is a Pellet which is easier to feed by miles.

ETA- i can also vouch for Gastri-X by hilton herbs it's a fantastic product but it was way to expensive for me to feed. My horse is 18hh & feeding the recomended 4 scoops daily meant i would run out every 2 weeks. However it did make a massive differance as i used this before Ulcers where confirmed.

Thanks for all your replies, he came home on Thursday on a 1/2 syringe of gastroguard for two weeks then 1/4 syringe for two weeks. He is also on 80ml on Antepsin daily for a month.

Once the gastroguard is finsihed then we need to put him on either the U Gard, Neighlox or similar. I have also had him on pink powder for the last two weeks which seems to of helped.

The concern is I want him on the best to maintain him when he goes away to be backed as obviously that will be stressful time, however cannot afford to pay Gastroguard prices, so will investigate the others.

It was amazing to see on the scopes just what the extent of damgage/ulceration the peritonitis had caused over the last month.

Vets have also recommended corn oil and Glutamine. Anyone tried these?

I forgot to say i also use Succeed this contains corn oil and Glutamine & it's brilliant.
Ive run out atm but i will be getting more when i get paid, have been using it since December with noticable results to my surprise seeing as what it's made out of.

The only down side is getting hold of it as you have to buy it from Vets & there are only 2 stockists available in the UK atm. I use the syringes but it comes in granule form as well i think the granules are cheeper.

Baz has had corn oil in his feed ever since his peritonitis. The vet recommended it as it is the most gentle and digestible form of oil you can feed. I buy mine in bulk from Sainsbury's in big bottles - always get strange looks at the checkout!! You need to intoduce slowly and build it up and I know some horses don't like the taste but fortunately I've never had a problem.

If he's prone to stressing how about asking your vet if it would be helpful to feed a calmer for a little while whilst he's being backed? I've previously used Global Herbs Supercalm and Equine America Magnitude and both seem to take the edge off Baz who can be a grumpy sod.

I wouldnt say Succeed treats anything its a supplement really but i have found it extremly helpful. My old TB has always suffered scouring not extreme but he's always done it. I put him on Succeed & it has totally transformed him, it's the only product ive known ever work on him.

I havent really noticed any major differances with my Ulcer horse since going on Succeed, but his Ulcers are gone so it's precaution feeding it more than anything.

I pay around £81 inc delivery for 30 syringes of succeed. You won't be able to get it from your vets unless they buy it in most wont.
My own vets wont so i have to buy it from a Vets in Lambourn of which there are 2 to choose from (lot's of choice eh!!!).
They are both listed on the Succeed website.

I must admit that I didn't see any difference when I used Succeed following a course of GastroGuard, the GG however made a huge improvement. My horse had got ulcers that were confirmed by scoping.

Another horse on the yard does seem to have improved on Succeed & a change to a fibre only diet but it wasn't confirmed at the start that he had ulcers & a scope after nearly 2 months of Succeed just showed a few slightly reddened areas.
