My horse has Colitis as confirmed by the vet yesterday and has been put on a course of antibiotics. However the behaviour she has displayed and the symptoms have been noticed by me every year she has come in for winter and it lasts all winter.

Vet is happy with her diet (Hay, hi Fibre nuts, Alfa A oil and Garlic, with 8hrs of turnout a day) She cannot stay out all winter as everything will be coming in and she seems to be pretty relaxed in her stable.

I am anxious to find something I can feed her that will help control the Colitis if she is prone to it. Does anyone have experience of this and have something they use that works? Vet has said to find something with Charcole as the active ingredient? But looking for a suppliment that is aimed at the colon / colitis is proving impossible and I don't want to have to get the vet out every year when she comes in at night!

Help!!! :D

No help with the supplements but I would cut out the garlic, it can irritate and cause problems to an otherwise healthy system so may be doing much more harm than good.

Fine fettle feeds do a charcoal supplement calle 'happy tummy'. one of mine has typhocolitis and gastric ulcers. He gets happy tummy and protexin biopremium added to his feed.

For charcoal based supplements, there is Happy Tummy. Charcoal isn't digested, but just removes toxins from the system and flushes them out with it :)

Get a good pro biotic supplement to keep his gut bacteria balance happy.

If you can find still find thrive anywhere, that stuff was brilliant to use.

Does it time in with her being wormed at all? Or a difference in grass proteins?

When my boy was ill the blood tests kept coming back with colitis (which just means inflammation of the gut, which we found out on post mortem was because his intestines were covered in melanomas) we striped his dirt down to pure fibre. No oil, no sugar beet as these feeds encourage food to move through the digestive system quickly. So I would swop the Alfa oil for a plainer variety.

Protexin do really good tummy supplements - I feed their Gut Balancer occasionally and it works very quickly for a runny tummy.

Our dog has colitis (sp?) and the best thing for her is the most plain diet you can get. I'd cut out the garlic for a start off.
