Collapsing hip while riding - exercises to help?

I have a few back issues, nothing serious but I am a little wonky even when stood on the ground! I know that this is effecting how Spring is going and I want to try and sort it out before she becomes irreversibly crooked.
I find I collapse my right hip and will slide out to the right, particularly when on the left rein. I have started riding without stirrups regularly which seems to help and I was brave and rode bareback last night which was really good for me! So I will continue to do this too. I need to start having lessons again as Spring has recovered well from her pulled muscle, money is just a bit tight at the moment.

So any exercises (on or off the horse) to help with my crookedness? I am going to try to get to an osteopath to check me out as well but any ideas to help are gratefully received!
 
Shut eyes, raise arms straight out in front of you, to the exact same height. Open eyes - is one higher than another? Try again (good for teaching your brain where your limbs are).
Get 2 sets of bathroom scales, and again with eyes shut, stand with one foot on each, and try to get equal weight on each foot. Open eyes, check weight distribution. Try again.
When you ride, get someone to look at your position (from behind) and move you til your bum is straight in the saddle, stirrups equal length (unless your legs are not the same length, in which case you have to adjust).

My friend felt her riding was causing her horse to be crooked too. She had a McTimoney session (friend not horse) and her riding is completely different, very noticebly better.

I'm going to give it a go and see if it works miracles on me

Pilates is very good for straightening out any uneveness. if you go to a few good classes you can then pick up a few techniques to follow at home. Alternatively you could have some private lessons. After years of on and off back probs, that was the thing that sorted out my back and was rec. by my physio (even though it resulted in less business for her!)
 
I am rectifying my collpasing right hip. Firstyl it is important to get yourself ironed out - I went to the McTimoney and had two sessions. Turned out my pelvis was out - RH side. Also my mare is stronger on the left so automatically throws me to the right .. so lots of work without stirrups for me too. I have tried Pilates and do recommend it highly, just dont seem to have enough time!

In addition to pilates/chiro blah blah blah

my quick tip for the day is to look backwards over your opposite shoulder, this will naturally bring your hip up and forwards. Obviously you will need to keep doing it, but once you have the feeling even just thinking about looking behind you helps.

You have the benefit of the £250 I have just spent at Talland trying to get myself straightened out!

Ooooo! I have a collasped right hip too (wonky back, L5/S1 degenerative discs and uneven when standing as well) so these tips are a godsend for me too! Thanks for starting this thread Dr_Spring!

The only thing about Pilates is that if you have a bad back, you have to be careful when doing it. YES, it does help but there are quite a few exercises that aren't suitable for those with back problems. You need to make sure that your instructor is familiar with back problems and which exercises to avoid. If the instructor is familar with back problems, then there are modified excerices out there.
I did take Pilates and had to quit as the class was moving onto exercises that were not suitable for my condition and my instructor was not familiar with the modified exercises.
 
Thanks for all your tips - it's good to know I am not alone in my wonkiness! Do people recommend a McTimony chiropractor over an osteopath? My back is not particularly bad but a friend who teaches pilates (who has unfortunately moved to the other end of the country) commented on my hips and shoulders being unlevel when I thought I was stood straight.

I chopse McTimoney as they had a local branch to me, and I liked what I read on their website. I think it comes down to personal choice at the end of the day.

Me three!
I think mine had been caused by being paranoid when out hacking and looking over my right shoulder for cars coming all the time!!
I think its caused my right hip to drop, the saddle to slide off centre and end up a funny shape and my horse to end up one sided too, so much rectification work required!!
Thanks all for the tips, anyone know a McTimony chiropracter in North derbyshire?!
