Done - i wonder how many people have been injured only on other peoples horses. I have never been badly injured on my own horses in my 30 yrs of riding, but have various injurys and broken bones from other peoples horses when asked if i can just hepl out!!

completed.

After I broke my collar bone initially I was riding again after 6 weeks. Starting slowly and building it up.
But it didn't heal correctly and I eventually had surgery. I now have a titanium plate.
After that I couldn't ride for 3 months. :-(

Done. Mine didn't heal properly and so they had to operate the following year, I now have a plate screwed into mine too.

I was fitted properly for my body protector (which I was wearing at the time) but shoulder pads weren't mentioned to me at all when I bought it, and it just didn't cross my mind that they exisited and that I should perhaps have had some!

I've since learned that shoulder pads GREATLY reduce the chances of breaking the clavical, and I now wear shoulder pads on my body protector as the surgeon told me wouldn't take another bash very well, and would be hard to repair again.

I wish when I'd bought the body protector that the 'professional body protector fitting service' at the saddlery had just mentioned shoulder pads, and I do sometimes wonder if I had been wearing them if I would have saved myself a lot of pain, surgery, and ongoing problems?

I would be interested to see how many people who complete this questionnaire to say they have broken their collar bone were wearing shoulder pads?

Done- to the best of my ability as am taking a very educated guess of what incident broke it as we didn't realise it had broken and re-set funny until a long time afterwards (now it's obvious, has a massive dip in it!).

done :) i was xc-ing at the time on my horrible old horse, no idea how i did it as had bad concussion as well, but i would imagine a bronk!!

ditto emmab haha!

Ok done but couldn't complete the way I wanted. I was lungeing my horse because I had a broken finger someone called me I looked over my shoulder someone else shut the big sliding door and he bolted. Cue superman impression and distal fracture of righ collar bone. This was over 7 years ago ( lost track).

Healed crooked NHS consultant just stuck it in a sling. 3 years ago was barged by a horse and it hurt like crazy. Appears it was never actually fixed only partially healed and now it is permanently unfixed just cartilage strapping it together.

So effectively it broke twice in reality it was never correctly healed.

Hi there,
Thanks to everybody who responded, its greatly appreciated!
due to the really helpful feedback i'm getting, i plan to use that original questionnaire as a pilot study and work on the questions to improve my outcome.
I plan to look slightly more into which side it was on in addition to how it happened.
There has also been feedback about people who didn't receive immediate medical attention such as surgery/plates and has had trouble further down the road so i hope to get some questions together to establish some comparisons there

So, i'm now going to improve the questions and i'll get another questionnaire online in the near future and let you all know!
Thanks again, couldn't do things like this without people like yourselves!
Rebecca
