My 14.2 Welsh D has just been diagnosed with collateral ligament strain. Right fore foot. He is sound on hard in straight lines and circle. Sound on soft without a rider but unlevel on soft with a rider and when asked to work correcty and the right fore to the outside. Anyone have any experiences they can share? Treatments, timescales, prognosis?

Basically, there are several treatment options: shock wave therapy, stem cell therapy, tildren, PRP, etc etc it just depends on what your vet thinks is best and how much you want to spend. You will almost certainly be advised to box rest. My horse is currently on 3 months box rest with 3 sessions of shock wave therapy given over 2 weekly intervals.
Tildren is megga expensive and I dont think it is terribly effective. Stem cell therapy is also megga expensive but I think it has had better results although nothing is guaranteed. Hopefully you are insured.
Then, of course, foot balance has be addressed. There are stories on here of horses going through all the available treatments with no success but then go on to try the barefoot option and have come sound.
Best of luck.

That's me tried everything above with my boy none worked and spent 2 years trying (was MRI'd so def collateral strain). He went to Rockly farm and within 4 months totally sound and hunting again! totally gobsmacked, he's barefoot and does everything that a shod horse does with no problems whatsoever, sooooooooo wish i had taken it as the first option instead of the last. Speak to Nic at Rockley she is fab and does the most amazing job with the horses. Good luck. xxxxxxxxxx

My boy strained collaterals in both fore legs last summer, finally confirmed by MRI in sept (whilst in hospital with suspected fractured radius!) had remedial shoeing and allowed out in very small paddock as had already been on box rest most of summer, healed really well but has just done his suspensories! Accident prone tb!
