Wallace, my father in law, took one look at her and said "Bess". So that's her name.

Picked her up and noticed straight away that she was covered in fleas. Didn't notice it the other day. Took her straight to the vets where she was registered and treated for it. Booked her in for her second jab on the 26th while we were there.

I can't begin to tell you how sorry we felt for her and how disappointed we are in how she was. She was literally covered in them. We've nit combed her and "nit picked" at her this afternoon to get alot of them out (vet said picking out what we could was a good idea as it was alot of critters for a little puppy). She fell asleep having it done, so it must've soothed her.

Here are some pictures. She's on Mary and Wallace's lawn....my dog never goes on their garden.

She lay on the lawn and me and Jenny (livery) were pulling fleas out of her.....it sent her to sleep. Bless her.

I have a question for anyone who breeds dogs, especially Border Collies...how old do you think she looks?

We asked the breeder for her date of birth and she went to fetch us all of the paperwork. She says she was born on the 12th June, but she doesn't look 8 weeks old to us. I think that's when the other litter (which were bigger) were born. She's eating moistened puppy food and lapping water no problems but we're now feeling rather dubious. She just looks so tiny when you see her wandering about but the vet didn't question that we'd got her already.

Also, would you worm her again? Breeder said he wormed her Monday night, but can we really believe him if he ignored such a flea problem? She has pooped, it was pale (ish) but not runny.

Hate to say it Patches but having seen the pic of mum in all of that s*it it doesn't surprise me. Thats not how you keep dogs

Anyhow...you've done the right thing and she looks extremely happy in her new home, glad you've picked her up earlier than you were thinking....more piccies needed

Bet the kids are making a fuss of her

I'd ask the vet re. worming. Just make sure she gets a good dose for her weight in two weeks - Drontal Puppy is the wormer we use.

I defended them too as they are a well respected local family!

I am also so very glad we didn't leave her there until the 24th now, which is what we'd originally planned due to our holiday. She will be at home with the in-laws as she's obviously their dog - on paper anyway - incase anyone worries we're leaving her alone.

I have some Drontal puppy liquid. I got it yesterday. She's very playful and adores people. Had no idea what grass was, bless her.

Can't imagine the condition she'd have been in with that flea burden for another few weeks. I must've squashed hundreds of the critters this afternoon...some huge, some small.

As I looked at the photos, before I read all the text, I thought - that pup doesn't look very old

I know border collies are nothing like as big as GSDs but she doesn'tlook 8 weeks to me. She also looks to have a bit of a wormy tum. Doesn't look as if the poor little mite has had the best of starts as she is covered with fleas. At that sort of age they should be wormed every 2 weeks, perhaps give her a day or two to recover from traumas of new home, de fleaing etc and then I think I would definitely worm her again. I use Drontal puppy liquid, it is very gentle on their systems.

Hi, your puppy looks very cute! may i ask where you got her from? I only ask because i picked up a border collie pup about a week ago and she looks very similar! You saying about her size, my little girl is also very small, we were told her age and make her 9 weeks now but she looks small for that. I also have a lab puppy and he was much much bigger at her age. I have had collie puppies before (grew uo with one called Bess!) and they soon shoot up, generally they get very leggy at about 6 months. Hope your having as much fun as i am!

I would say six weeks and her tum also looks bloated and wormy to me. She is absolutely gorgeous, though, and I'm so glad you got her out of a horrid situation.

I think six weeks too. When we viewed last week we were told she was five weeks and would be ready at the end of August. Then they called to say they'd mixed dates up and she was actually 7 weeks at the weekend just passed and the vet was happy for them to go today after they were jabbed yesterday.

I am thinking the original dates are correct.

What sort of food for dogs looks like a cereal type mix you feed to horses? That was what the food looked like today. Bit like rabbit food with quite large chunks of flaked type maize and big pieces of what looked like cow cake (corn). There was a lot in a piggery trough thing and it wasn't damp. Can't imagine she couldn've eaten/digested whatever it was anyway. I've never seen dog food like it. There hasn't been food in there when we've visited before, but I just assumed we'd missed meal times. When asked what they were fed we just told "any puppy food is fine, she's a good eater"

They keep sheep. Could it be sheep feed?

She's now on Beta puppy. Four small meals a day, moistened down with water and is having water to lap.

Will call vet in the morning to see about worming her again. We have Drontal Puppy but the breeders did say she was wormed on Monday......

It was Promeris Duo the vet administered for fleas. She's a little young for it if she's less than eight weeks but I'm not sure how else her huge flea burden was supposed to be tackled. He never questioned her age.

What a lovely puppy. The food you describe may be Vitalin.
Just a thought, in your last post you said she was injected the day before. Do you have the vet certificate to verify this?
If they let the poor pups get so badly infested with fleas, would they really have them vaccinated! I also think she looks about 6 weeks. i would still be giving her some milky meals as well to build her up, goats milk is best.

Keep putting up the pics, she is lovely

Our labs food looks like a cereal mix but it is specifically made for them as working dogs?

Arrr...I've only ever fed traditional kibble type food. Sounds like it could be the adults food with them being working sheep dogs....unsuitable for pups I'd assume?

Beta Puppy should be fine for her. I was thinking about milk for her. Used to be able to buy "puppy milk".....is that just goats or soya milk then?

Oh yes. We have her card. She was vaccinated by the vet who we took her to today, so it was all verified.

He had advised them about the flea problem in the puppies but said they didn't look that bad yesterday. Wondering whether she suddenly had more from the bedding jump on her today as she was the last one to be collected....so they had no other puppies to target. She is from ISDS registered stock that are hip scored, CEA clear etc so it's not all bad news.

New puppy looks gorgeous and already settled

The last pup I had, I had at 7 weeks because the breeder wanted rid early as he was going away - that was fine, but the first day the puppy pooed/was sick - OMG it was like a plate of spaghetti - you have never seen so many worms. It was truly frightening. However, like you, a trip to the vets (booked anyway for jabs) and the worms were taken care of.

He also came with masses of fleas
frown.gif
We have never had a flea problem before and it did take some time to get rid of them completely - despite spraying the basket, the house, the kennel and the dog
frown.gif
When I bathed him for the first time his whole chest and tummy was completely covered in flea bites - it must have been driving him mad
frown.gif
Despite doing whatever I thought possible - I kept finding the odd flea months later.

On a brighter note however - three years later and I haven't seen a flea for ages

Aw she is absolutely gorgeous Patches

. I'd say she is about 6 or 7 weeks, possibly not 8 weeks yet; however I wouldn't worry about it, she'll be fine
cool.gif
. All of our collies have been 6 weeks old when we have bought them; actually so was the Akbash and the Springer, lol! The only dog I have bought at an older stage was the shepherd and she was 9 weeks old. All of mine have been excellent little puppies and I'm sure your little girl will be too. Is she to be an outside dog or will she live in the house with M and W?

She looks little to me too. Ours were born 10th June and look much more mature.
Were the pups kept on straw because I was told they do get fleas from straw?
She looks very cute, I hope she is 8 weeks though as she shouldn't really have her vaccination before that. Bless her, hope the rest of the pups are as lucky as yours and get lovely homes.

Hopefully with a bit of tlc and a decent diet Bess will soon be fine. If she has a really heavy flea load she might be a bit anaemic. I don't personally like the maize based meals although I know many people are happy with them. Beta puppy should be fine for her, be careful not to give her any extra vitamins as a complete food is just that and adding bits can do more harm than good. The age for giving vaccinations seems to always be changing, it always used to be 8 weeks, then when parvo arrived vets started doing pups at 6 weeks. When I last had a litter of pups here the vets said 8 weeks, band now when I asked about Evie being done they said any time after 6 weeks, with the 2nd one at 10 weeks.

Interesting re vaccines MM, my vet tells me (and America backs this thought) that the antibodies from the mothers colostrum protect the puppy up until 14 weeks and by vaccinating before that the antibodies kill off the vaccine leaving an unprotected puppy - this could be the answer to why so many vaccinated dogs pick up full blown Parvo. I now have mine done at 13 and 16 or 17 weeks.

Before we collected her, she was supposed to be more of an outside dog. Sleep in a big shed (with heat lamp connected if there was a need to dry her off after fetching cows etc) and would be allowed in the house when the men came in for breakfast, lunch etc.

Obviously, she was always going to spend time in the house as a wee thing.

However, day one (we were warned by father in law not to make her soft!) and he has already announced she can't possibly sleep outside in a shed over winter.....and probably never (once the flea problem is sorted!)

Wallace went straight down the little shed this morning (we put her in my incubator shed last night as she was alive with critters....more comfortable than where she has slept before we got her) and he brought her in to Mary.

I've been nit picking, so to speak, this morning. She's clearly got loads less fleas, but is scratching less. Only concern I have is the one's I'm finding don't look like they're suffering from the effects of the flea treatment.

Gah. I hate fleas!
