Hi all, Just a quick question, was wondering how stallion owners manage to collect semen off a stallion at such short notice to send off to mare owners/AI centres, if there isn't a mare in season around the stallion at that time when the recipient mare requires it?? I know that on the bigger studs where they have a high number of mares about, there is a high chance that one will always be in season, but what if there isn't many mares and none of them are in season when the stallion needs collecting from??
Just something I had wondered!!

I think that stallions get trained to mount a dummy, and they probably use a mare in the beginning, but in the end, the stallion just gets used to walking into the covering yard and leaping on the dummy whether there is a mare there or not. Like most males, healthy stallions are desperate to get their rocks off.

If trained properly, a stallion will (in most cases) develop a Pavlovian-type response to going into a semen collection situation (whether that is dummy, ground, or manual collection).

They build an association between the process of getting ready for collection (bridle/chain, washing, going to a certain place), and certain visual/physical clues (AV, dummy, etc.), so when they are exposed to these stimuli, they become aroused, and know that they will get to ejaculate ("Whoopee!").

The biggest studs may rely on the chance of a mare being in season, or they might have an ovariectomised mare. These mares have had their ovaries removed, and so do not experience oestrus or dioestrus. The ovariectomy operation is quite expensive, and as far as I am aware only a few vets will perform it, due to possible complications and infection risks.

But, in most cases, if a stallion has been trained to collect, even a dioestrus, or anoestrus mare will be enough visual stimulus to help them collect if they do need additional eye candy.

Stallion preference!! I have one that loves a grey and I regularly use a grey gelding over a mare in season!! And most adore a coloured pony!

Most of ours collect just with the dummy mare there.
In fact we collected from the lovely AmourG yesterday for the first time since his training and he collected without a tease mare.
He isnt resident her either just a walk in stallion so it was good that he remembered so well.
So most will readily learn what is required from them.

What a good boy

That explains a lot. My CB stallion has permanent hots for my 11hh piebald filly. She is savage with him, standing on hind legs and boxing him with front feet.

Do I gather that for a stallion the equivalent of a dirty mag is a plastic dolly?

I know a stallion that does the business when a pair of clippers is turned on! Might be quite handy if you didn't want them to learn how to cover a mare but could get semen when you wanted!
