Collecting Ring Manners

Lol - what I love more is asking my mum to do fences and having to embarasingly explain across the warm up what kind of fence I want as if I was speaking to a child that had never seen a showjump before. I wouldn't mind but we've been going to BS for years, and my mum is the PC SJ team manager (thankfully I'm now too old ;) ), I think she tries to do a bad job so she won't get asked

My old mare, out of no where, suddenly started being incredibly nervous of horses cantering towards her - I can only assume there was a crash/near miss in the field. I worked on it at home a lot, and went out with a green ribbon tied in her tail and forelock...no difference.

Changed both to a red one, and tied a red ribbon to the end of my schooling stick...that sorted them!

A little white lie, but now if I had a horse I felt needed that bit of distance I would immediatly just use red.

I always tie red ribbon in my boys tail.. not that is make slightlest bit of difference. He doesn't kick but does have a slightly bouncy bottom so put it in to warn people to keep their distance but still they ride right up his backside. He's only 6 and now from having people come so close and barge him he gets really defensive in warm up arenas even if i'm totally calm and theres not many in their.. It's almost like he's defending himself and me just in case.

Totally agree need to educate riders again in all disicplines. I always try and stick to the rules as much as possible as its something that really bugs me!!

HAHA!! my mum is the same (although not a team manager, but she is horsey and has ridden for yeaaaarrrs) - but when i want a fence it takes a fair while for her to understand what i want :p so usually i just jump what other people put up and don't bother asking mother, bless her!

Hi all, first time posting on here, normally just read , but this is issue really does annoy me!

I find shared warm ups at unaffiliated the worst! When i first got my mare (a big 16.3 hunter), i took her to a unaffiliated to get used to her at competitions. BIG MISTAKE. Children on small ponies who charged up her backside, in front of her, sideways at her, didn't shake her but left my nerves in tatters.

Even had the nerve or complete ignorance to cut across the landing of a jump as me and my mare were at the last stride. She slammed on the brakes, sliding into the jump, sending poles cups and wings flying. Girl didn't even apologise.

Having been a child on a small pony not so many years ago, i was never rude ignorant or stupid enough to ride outside the rules or warm up. Also my mum and instructor would have been furious at my behaviour.

I totally agree with what was said before about pony clubs drilling kids about it when theyare young, and the need for good (and normally under appreciated) stewards.

Certainly will not take my youngster to such places in the summer, but by the sound of things affiliated may not be much better!

BtW sorry about the rant :o.

It has to be said though, the most infuriating, inconsiderate habit is crowding round the entrance/exits to the rings with horses on lead ropes. I had brilliant fun last weekend trying to wagon a recently backed 4yo round a warm-up with at least 1/4 cut off. And then trying to battle through them all to get into 'the tunnel' (which was a very flappy marquee) without getting the pony or myself kicked. The amount of kicking matches I've seen from people standing around with their horses like this!
The other one is wandering around, on a loose rein, in double file chatting. It's just inconsiderate and unnecessary. Put the horse back on the lorry and chat, not in the warm up!
Anyway, rant over :p

Answer = One very large TB with enormous fear of anything coming to close or directly towards him. He very much makes his own space in the warm-up. Not in any nasty, just turns very quickly and runs away! Although he's very good when given enough space

Cross pole she understands, its the upright that always gets her. 'No mum, just a straight pole, parallel to the ground, on it own, yes. I don't care what you do with the ground pole, as long as its on this side, oh and stop faffing with it so I can actually jump!' :D

I appreciate the help, but honestly! :D

haha! yes! obviously the help is appreciated but it is a little bit silly :p sometimes my mum gets confused about ground poles, and puts them on the wrong side.. or tries to build an oxer with the back rail lower than the front, and i'm like ''no mum, put the back rail up a bit please...'' hahaha

as despite a green ribbon they will gallop their horses right up my horses or arse or practically brush right pash him sending him into orbit.

I got told by a BSJA judge last night that a green ribbon now means that the rider has a disability of some kind (like deaf etc.). Dont know if this is a current rule or one which will be brought in, but I pointed out that everyone knows green means its a young horse... they should have chosen a different colour!

:D:D
That means 90% of the riders in most of the collecting rings I have been in will be wearing them :p;)

White means a disability, not green.

Recently this is something that I have noticed a lot and it really annoys me. So many occasions where I've had to swerve to avoid someone not passing left to left.
I have also had to serve away from a practise fence that someone was jumping the wrong way round, despite the fence having a red wing and a white wing, plus a take off pole on the correct side. It amazes me how many people do jump practise fences the wrong way.

I also had someone who stopped their horse, for no apparent reason, right in front of the practise fence about a stride or two away on the landing side, just as my horses feet where leaving the ground. We just about avoid a collision, but I'm not sure how.

I'm also dreading taking babies out. Last show I went to was a dressage show locally. The warm up was awful again no clue of the left to left rule. Horse I was riding had 3 horses smash into him because they were not concentrating. I;d see them coming and slow down/stop and they would just continue looking the other way and go straight into me. Jump in the warm up was being jumped by competitors competeing in my class! DRESSAGE!! Collecting ring stewards did not say a word I was shocked and felt like untacking and going home horse was green and by the time we went in for our test he'd had enough and so had I! Went another show to support a friend a couple of weekends ago the warm up was crazy! People warming up for a class that hadn't even started yet etc so it was mobbed. Circling in front of jumps. Jumps being knocked down and left. No left to Left people stood chatting on horses bums facing out to the track round the edge of warm inside it!! Friend went in luckily right in time before her a young girl had came off in the class so a guy jumped on her horse the second the horse stepped through gate trackies and trainers hat not he's perched on top of head not done up fighting the horse round the warm up horse rearing bucking leaping through people trying to warm up him shouting and whipping it! Completely shocked no one said a word so I voiced my opinions of people paying for a class and trying to warm up not dodge a prat trying to show off he left the collecting ring and continued to upset the pony in the car park I could have takenn the whip and smacked him across he's bum over and over. Venues well known and normally well run don't think ill be taking the young boys there!

Have not read through whole thread, so sorry if I am repeating something already said.. but the thing that annoys me the MOST is walking and/ or stopping (often to adjust girth etc!) on the outside track in a dressage warm up.

We even had this problem at a PL in the summer. The same person (who should have known MUCH better) didn't seem to have much regard for where people were going and constantly cut them up/rode a piri right in front of someone/frequently gave their horse maHusive kicks sending it flying around the arena, scattering other competitors. Our chestnut boy can be a little windy when he's out anyway, so our aim is to keep him concentrating... Not helped by this 'professional'.

When we mentioned this to the steward, she just laughed and said 'Oh dear.. these professionals!' AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!

Rant done :)

Usually I am more of a lurker than a poster but as this is my number one HATE I had to post my agreement with you all!!!!!

Bring back the good old fashioned collecting ring stwerard who will only allow you in the warm up when you have 6 to go, will only allow the fences to be jumped the right way at the right height and generally ensure people are "educated". If you are only allowed in the warm up with 6 to go there wont be time for wandering around have a good old gossip riding 3 abreast!!

GRRRRRR - calm restored and back to lurking!!:p
