Ive got a big problem that is stressing me out :S

Im on my GCSE's now and have looked around at the colleges and so on and decided to take a national diploma in horse management at writtle college, i did look around at different colleges but writtle seems the best and i have my heart set on going there... i have my place there but theyve asked that to have my place succured i have to get grades A*-C in maths english science and one extra subject.

I have my extra subject sorted and i have done my English and science exams early and got C's and above in them so that fine but maths is the big problem

My school had a shortage of maths teachers and my class had a useless substitute for two years, now ive got to year eleven they finally gave us a good teacher but im worried it just too late... i understand what he teaches us but its just not sticking and in the exams we have done i have been getting U's and E's and its panicking me beyond beleif :'(

I need to get into this college its what i really want but I know im going to fail maths. Has anyone been in this situation? Does anyone know if they will ignore my maths result or listen to my reasoning as to why ive done so bad?

I think you've just gotta keep going-- the best way to learn and remember maths is to DO maths

So get your hands on LOADS (and I do means LOADS) of practice questions and just do them and keep doing them! It will bore you beyond belief but you'll get there in the end! When you're so focused on something you wanna do not much can stop you- even bad teachers!

Now you got a good teacher ASK him for help-- go at lunch, break- after school even if he'll do it!

Good luck! XD

could you get a maths tutor for a few weeks - would definitley recommend it, i had a similar situation (although it was a long time ago now!) and had a tutor once a week for about 5 weeks - it helped no end ended up with a B i think in the higher paper (was only predicted a D on the lower paper originally) - Best of luck - it seems a long time since i sat any exams, but remember how stressful they are!

Yeah ive been revising none stop but then i pick up a pratise exam and end up doing soooo bad

and i finish school in less than a month now... thankyou _bannerama_ im hoping if i dont get much of a good grade they might take into account why, fingers crossed and seeing as i have got all B's and C's in my other subjects that might help. Ive tried looking for a tutor but no luck everyones either taken or can only give me classes at rediculous times so ive been doing extra classes with my maths teacher after school... its just sooo hard :'( and having a horse i went through winter having to rush up the yard coz everyone got the horses in rediculously early, hopefully now they can stay out for a while longer and i can have freedom to be late up the yard

I agree with Bannerama, I did my national diploma in HM at Rodbaston, To get in you just needed ANY four GCSEs A-C though they would of liked them to include maths it was not essential, and to be honest we hardy did any maths as part of the course, most advanced maths was calculating horses rations.
Hope this helped dont worry though, try ringing admissions and discuss your concern. Remember dont get stressed out! thats only to secure your place!

Ok can anyone do this :

An inheritace is to be shared between 3 brothers, Alan, Barry and Colin. The will stipulates that Barry should recieve twice as much as Alan but £8000 less than Colin. The inheritance totals £52,000. How much will each son receive?

I bow down to anywho who can do this

) and Warwickshire college let me in to do a horse course

Most colleges you have to do key skills anyway which is equivilant to a GCSE level C so as long as you do ok in your other subjects and everything you should be able to get in

Ok here's how I worked it out
What we know is (have abreviated the names)
B=2xA
C= B+8
Thus C = (2xA) + 8
also we know
A+ B + C = 52K
This could be written as
A + (2xA) + [(2xA) + 8] = 52
so 5 xA = 52minus8 = 44
thus Alan get 44/5 = £8,800
Barry gets £17,600 (2 x £8,800)
Colin gets £25,600

I find with this sort of thing is first write down all the facts so you know what is going on. Then re-write it in a more convenient way to calculate the result - you do have to make sure each side of the equation balances, so what you take off one side you add to the other, or what you multiply by you divide by the other side.
I would actually suggest to get some KS2 (I think it is) workbooks for 11+ and do those - but time yourself on them, aim for doing them accuratgely at speed so it comes as second nature and gives you more confidence to tackle harder stuff. I would think it's the basics you're struggling with once you've mastered them all the complicated stuff is easy

OK its been a while but I did get an A Level so here goes:

First, lets look at what the question tells us:

The brother that gets the least is Alan lets call his share A.
Barry gets twice as much as Alan, so his share is 2A.
Colin gets the same as barry + £8000, so his share is (2A+8000)

With me so far?

Therefore we need to work out what A is, by divding the total by the shares like this:

£52000 = A + 2A + (2A + £8000)
52000 = 5A - 8000
(52000 - 8000) = 5A
44000 = 5A
44000/5 = A
8800 = A

Threfore:

Aluns share was A = £8,800
Barrys share was 2A = £17,600
Colins Share was (2A + 8,000) = £25,600
Check the answer by adding them up (should be £52,000)

You just have to not panic and tease out the information in the question. Show all your working, cos even if you get the answer wrong you will get marks for trying.

Not trying to show off, just to help, PM me if you need anymore. My friends and I had crap teaching for our A Level and dragged each other through it.

Im going to be starting Writtle in september too! But really don't worry too much, when I actually did my GCSE's (seems ages ago now, even though im still on the young side of 20) they were much better than I thought they would be. You get so into the 'zone' so doing them that revising and sitting exams becomes second nature to you.

Maths was my big problem too. Try calling Writtle, I know that at my sixth form college they had classes for people who didn't necessarily get the required grades, so that they could learn for a while longer and then retake the exams.

Remember they've given you that place for a reason and want you to go there so they will try and help you. Hopes this helps you x
