Hi

I need some advice for what to do in the following situation.
My 4 year old 17.2hh had an emergency collic operation 1st marc, luckily he pulled through to make an excellent recovery!
He is back in work going on large hacks and has lunging sessions, he has just began schooling again.
His wound has completely healed and the scar tissue is virtually gone. Obviously it's too soon to start jumping but when would you recommend starting again (small fences

Thanks!!!

So sorry to hear that your horse has been ill but it sounds like he has made a good recovery . I think your vet would be the best person to ask as we don't know the full facts.
welcome to the forum

Yes, welcome to the forum. As Carthorse has said, I would ask your vet. They should give you a full fitness programme to work to. He is only 4 years old so still a baby. Can you tell us what his breeding is?

I second speaking to the surgeon who performed the operation... they are the best person to give you advice regarding this as they know exactly what was done in the surgery

My friend's horse had the op two weeks before my mare (who had it on 16th Dec) and he is back out jumping now seven months later

Hi!!

My horse had an epiploic entrapment as a 3 year old. He had 2 surgeries and I was back competing him (dressage) 4 months after surgery.

I would suggest that if you know your horse you will know when is suitable. Take your time and don't rush. Let your horse set the pace.

my boy had 10ft removed from his small intestine and had 6 months off recommended by vets. He was then brought slowly into work. we did not compete for a whole year and he is now back in better form then he has ever been. Don't rush you have the rest of his life now as you are one of the lucky ones. Even if he does look good and full of life it's still a major operation.

Great!! Thanks everyone

i'll let my vet have a look with the next visit.

It's reassuring to hear others have also had the operation and have made full recoveries!
