The local council is intending to fence off Colney Heath Common Hertfordshire which has been used for local horse riders to excercise their horses so that cattle can be allowed to graze it. Instead of having a number of different accesspoints to the common horse riders will have to ride along some busy roads to access a proposed new 10m wide access track which will also be used by cyclists and pedestrians. Horse riders will also have to contend with cattle grazing the common. A public meeting is to be held at Colney Heath Village Hall 83 High Street Colney Heath St Albans Hertfordshire Al4 0NS on Tuesday 11th December 2007 at 7.00 p.m. All are welcome. If you or your friends use the common please attend and air your views.

Not again, what is it with people shutting off horse riding routes, did we suddenly get leprosy or what, it's getting ridiculous, dont tell me, the cattle have nowhere to graze because of house building so they have to have the common, something doesnt smell right here and it's not the cow poo

Hi Peter,

I will be going to the meeting!

Am very against the proposal which ignores the 99+ benefits the common as it stands has for all sorts of people (walkers, horseriders, people with dogs that dont mix well with other dogs etc)and sacrifices them for the 1 benefit of vegetation maintenance. Actually people are very happy with the common as it is thankyou

There are so few places to ride freely around the area that the suggestion of restricting common land is outrageous. Especially as if F&M breaks out again it would mean the common would then be closed which it isnt today.

Unlike the similar proposals elsewhere also being 'consulted on' the local council say no consultation is needed for Colney Heath as they consulted years back - so why is the Countryside management service asking for public feedback on their website?!!!

I am a member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust so love my rare breeds of farm animals but even I am not in favour as this site is not big enough to lose even this section from full access.

This is just stupid, there aren't very many places to ride in that area. What is it with people these days? They don't want horse riders on the roads and it's beginning to seem like they don't want them any where else either!
