Ok so I know Herbie is BAY ROAN but people keep telling me he's strawbery roan.
I mat a lady the other day with a pony who looks egsactly like Herbie. Black mane, tail and points. She was adiment her pony was strawbery roan!
So can a bay roan ever be a strawbery roan. I'm getting confused with all the new colour rules. Bring back the good old days of Black, Bay, Chestnut, Grey, Roan, Dun, palamino, Piebold, Skewbold, Spotted and odd. Life used to be so much simpler back then :p

Heres a pic of my boy. The other pony looks just like him only bigger.

I know I shouldn't let it annoy me but he's deff a bay roan. I try and try to explain this to people but they just don't get it.

I've never met a bay roan, looks strawberry to me but im no expect! like moomin says it doesn't matter

my horse is dun but according to people on here she can't be dun she must be a buckskin, but she was sold to me as a dun! I registered her passport as a dun, so she's dun to me! :) it wont change her

Think of colour genes as building blocks. Take the roan out of him and you have a bay. Therefore he is a bay roan :)

ETA: the roan gene disperses white hair into the coat, not affecting the head points mane and tail

It doesn't realy matter. He'll always be bay roan to me and it says that in his passport. I was just wondering if a horse with black mane, tail and points can ever be strawbery or not. I know there are alot of very knowligable people on here re colourings and genetics and all that :)

All this 'roaning' is very confusing....... All I know is my horse blends in with the mud and has ginger and black bits on him!

you have a rather unique pony there! Lovely colour and a real stand out from the crowd!

To answer your question, no a bay roan can never be a strawberry roan as the base colors are totally different. Bays are bay underneath and have black points, strawberries are chestnut underneath and have chestnut points blacks are black underneath and have black points etc etc and that's about it really to be honest!

Is Herbie from the Lucky Lane line of newfies?

Is Herbie from the Lucky Lane line of newfies?

Can't see that name in his extended pedigree. He's by Sturtmoor Arctic Fox Who was strawberry roan apparently. Herbies mum was Bay so I guess he got the roan gene from his dad and the bay gene from his mum :)

Thankyou TandD I love his colouring. He goes so pink in the summer.
