Colour experts. Bay or red buckskin?

He doesn't seem so red as other bay foals I've seen, more of a golden, but still looks bay to me though not 100% sure. Dam is bright bay and sire is smokey black.

Yes it's quite unusual as it's quite strong. There is something about the colour that although I think 'bay' it is not quite like other bay foals I have seen. There is less variation in colour along the hair shaft. He is also quite dark around his eyes.

I would say he could be buckskin! Smokey black carries a copy of the creme gene.

Was the sire colour tested? My guess is just a very lovely bay, personally, but for £17.50 you could be sure

He isn't like any of the bay foals I've seen before, so going on that, to me he is buckskin, which I think is fab!!

Thanks everyone. Rhino, I will tell the owner about that test. It will be well worth having it done if only to make sure he is registered correctly. He looks exactly the colour of the golden buckskin foal here part way down the page, except he doesn't have red in his mane: http://www.morgancolors.com/buckskin.htm I can't wait to see what colour he moults out to.

Anyone else seen a buckskin start off this colour? He is more chestnut than bay but with a black mane and tail.

Thanks, we think so. He runs around squealing when he gets out. He is so excited. Just wish this bloomin' weather would dry the fields up so he can be out 24/7.

I have a feeling you are right. Owner wanted a buckskin. I think he will darken up a lot as he has dark hairs around his eyes and his coat is very dark underneath on his forehead and near the top of his neck, but a really pale colour on his rump. Will be interesting to see how he changes.

OP, the dorsol (sp) stripe could mean he's some variation of dun (not buckskin) however my money is on bay
