My 4 yr old seems to be going spotty! She is a really bright chestnut and just recently seems to be getting proper white spots, mostly on her head and a few on her side and neck. Think sort of like Toytown

They are very regular round patches of white hair, which otherwise look normal, other than the fact they werent there a month ago!

She is mostly TB with some pony blood and a tiny bit of arab in her, so not sure where they are coming from. Dam was chestnut (no spots) and sire was bay.

Any thoughts? She looks quite sweet now, but any more and she will look like an appaloosa! lol

My YO has a chestnut mare (WB) thats exactly the same, she started getting them at 3 years old, shes now 13 and has them all over her. She looks gorgeous

Well ive read an article that atributed the white spots comming from a copper (i think ) deficency....i might google it and try and find the article....it did go on to say that isnt the case in all horses tho and it can just be one of those things

tbh i love to see a chestnut with white spots

,are they actually classed as coloured????

Birdcatcher spots are small white spots, usually between 1 mm and 1 inch (25.4 mm) in diameter. It is not yet known what controls their expression, although it is believed that they are not genetic. Birdcatcher spots occur in many breeds. These spots may occur late in a horse's life, or may occur and then disappear.

the above from wikipedia
my chesnut mare has a couple of little ones on her bum all year round and i have a friend whos mare (also chesnut) gets several with her summer coat every year, usually in slightly different locations.

Marley is exactly the same has black and white spots on his bum, but he does have Connemara in him so thats where it comes from but he is most defintiely chestnut

perhaps it is genetic after all! That name surely must come from the fact it had birdcatcher spots?!

Ticking or Birdcatcher ticks are markings that involves white flecks of hair at the flank, and white hairs at the base of the tail, called a "skunk tail". These patterns are permanent and probably genetic. It is thought that this roaning effect might be linked to the rabicano gene. The name comes from a Thoroughbred horse named Birdcatcher, who had white hairs throughout his flank and tail.

more wikipedia not me!

My chestnut part arab mare gets a few random white spots all over. They seem to appear very quickly and go with coat changes. They are in differnt places each year.

I am glad this came up, I thought I was going mad, Dexter has 3 new white spots on his side, I could have sworn they were never there before, so this probably explains it

This is quite well known in chestnuts. My mare has a few white spots and clumps of hair. One summer she sprouted quite a few more all in one go. I used to know a mare that was a complete "reverse" appaloosa - chestnut base with white spots all over.
