Posting on behalf of a friend who has a grey mare. for the top part of the pedigree her sire was a dark cream (looks like a palomino to give an idea of the actual shade) his sire is chestnut and dam cream. next generation back for the sire has 2 chestnuts a grey and a dun. next back has 4 chestnuts 2 greys one cream and one dun. On her dam side the first 3 generations are all grey and 4th generation has 7 greys and one bay. question is what colour stallion has the highest probability of breeding out the grey? she is well aware that its not going to be easy but is interested in trying. all the colours come from the pedigree so she cannot say what the original colours were but if it helps some were dark grey :D

OK, so your friend's grey mare has one grey gene (as her dam was grey, but her sire wasn't). Therefore, the best chance of getting a non-grey foal is to breed the mare with a non-grey stallion. That would give you a 50% chance of a grey foal.
 
It sounds like your friends mare will be heterozygous for grey - she will breed grey 50% of the time if bred to a non-grey stallion.

I had a feeling that was going to be the case so she just needs to do what she is doing and keep her fingers crossed that what pops out is not only very cute (that bit is certain :D ) but not going to grey out as well. Many thanks :)
 
As stated above if the mare is heterozygous for the grey gene (one copy) and it does sound like she is, then your friend will have a 50-50 chance of a none grey foal. However thats the text book definition!! I have a heterozygous grey broodmare, sire grey and dam none grey, we have produced 7 foals out of her (4 different stallions) and every single one of them has been grey, also every single one of them has been a colt. She is a mare that really stamps her foals, she loves producing little boy carbon copies of herself. She is due to foal in about 5 weeks and I can virtually guarantee that we will be given another stunning grey colt. So it is not always written in stone :-)

Oh that will make her bash her head on a wall when I tell her as from talking to her I don't think her mare would take any notice of the textbooks :D Good luck with yours she may decide to suprise you with a non grey filly
