colour of your horse - did it matter to you?

I did intentionally avoid greys and other pale-coloured horses when we last horse-shopped, due to the problems of keeping them clean! Our horses go out in the field a lot, and we have no mains water on the yard, plus compete a lot - so wanted something that was easy to scrub up!

Doesn't matter too much, but as a starting point, coloureds always make me do a double take when I'm looking for a horse. So if I'm scrolling through a website, the coloured mares will always make me zoom in for a closer look.
That said, last mare was black and very beautiful.

I was very particular about what I wanted!

I wanted a black HW cob gelding with white socks and blaze - the only think that was an absolute definite in there was the gelding part so as sods law goes I was taken by a bright bay MW cob mare with white socks and a star! And I love her muchly x

I only looked at horses that I liked the colour of. I didn't want grey, bay or coloured.

I was looking for my horse of a lifetime and every box had to be ticked.

Not hugely but I wouldn't look at coloured (sorry just don't like them) unless I knew the horse and liked it's temperment. I am drawn to greys but my lad caught my eye because I'm a sucker for a sorry looking horse (he was hiding at the back of his stable and when the dealers child went in and flung his arms around his neck and he relaxed into the kid I knew he was a kind soul so I fell for him..he's a brown cob, changes colour thoughout the year but generally is a lovely deep shiney brown and I adore him. :D

I adore chestnuts and dont like bays! Needless to say I have a dark bay  Wouldn't change him for the world now though. I think people should be open minded to colours... Temperament and character should come first.

I really love dappled dark bays and would've liked one. Or a bright bay :D So I was hoping I'd end up with a bay of some sort, or a grey, but wasn't looking at colour specifically at all.

I got a chestnut :) Not fussy really, a good horse is never a bad colour...

I don't limit myself by colour, although have preferences - not greys due to the stable stains and mud!

When looking for my first horse, I didn't particularly want a chesnut, and of course ended up with one...now chesnuts ALWAYS catch my eye.

Had stopped the search for the second horse until I saw a palomino advertised....wanted a palomino since I was a little girl, so had to go & look at him! Was sort of hoping he'd not be any good, but turned out to be lovely, so bought him.

Have to say though, the pally is far easier to keep clean than the chesnut. Mud slides off the pally but sticks like glue to my old boy.

Yup, my grey is easier to keep clean than my bay as she has such a sleek coat and the bay is a baggage about letting you near her tickly bits or her mane. :)

Kind of..

I wouldn't have minded what colour the horse was if it was the right one for me, but I had a soft spot for greys (bearing in mind i'd never had one before!) and saw a grey mare, liked her.. so I bought her.

Lets just say I won't be buying another grey any time soon..... :D

Personally I don't mind what colour my horses are but I see colour as just as valid a criteria as breed, height, weight etc so I don't think there's anything wrong with people who want a certain colour of horse. Many of my clients, when they send me their wish list, say they want a certain colour, a certain breed, a certain temperament and a certain height, so when I'm searching for them, those are the only horses I look at. There are so many horses out there that is usually not difficult to find them everything on their wish list :)

I would only ever have an ex-racehorse or TB and they only come in certain colours, my prefered colour being Bay, but I don't mind Chesnut or Grey. It's not something that's make or break when looking at a horse, although a fiery attitude is a must. I like a horse to keep you on your toes.

Not really, my fave colour is liver chestnut and I prefer dark colours with minimal white, but I would consider anything that suited my needs and was within my price range.

The only colour I would NOT consider for a second is cremello.

I was not allowed to get anything with white on it!! My mum is my groom and she is ocd with it being clean! So beautiful greys were out of the question! Ended up with a bay gelding, to go with our cheeky chestnut.

I thought appies were ugly, and felt so sorry for my old boy that I ended up getting him :o He polished up nicely though, I think he is a very handsome thing now, and I've been converted, I would always go for another appaloosa!

My favourite colours are dark bay and mouse dun (grulla) :p I definitely did buy my young boy because of his looks, he is a very pretty dark bay! I also did want something I could keep clean, so no greys (sister has a white grey and spends all her time and money trying to keep him that way :p) and I've never been a massive coloured fan. I just like a bay, tb type, straightforward looking horse :p

Colour didn't really matter to me, i'm not a fan of patches but i wouldn't not buy because of this, grey not ideal but again i would still buy if the right horse, turns out she is very dark bay. But she is a mare and i didn't want that!!!!!!

They do however have to have some white on thier heads (devils gateway). :D

The breed matters to me, the talent matters to me, the mind matters to me. The colour doesn't, because everyone knows I'll always turn up with an orange horse, anyway. Any shade of orange is just fine, but it will be orange!

I currently have a horse on loan which was offered to me last summer by someone who knew I loved Arabs and when they sent me a photo, that clinched it - she is chestnut - and I had wanted a chestnut Arab since I was 6 . . . which was a very, very long time ago!

Edited to say that, conversely, I would never, ever even look at anything coloured and bay is right down there at the bottom with coloureds.

I definitely have favourite colours - grey, black, dun and palamino. I don't dislike any colours/patterns, spots included, and often find 'ugly' horses adorable, much like people love pug dogs for being cute-ugly! My least favourite is probably dark bay, but I'd never dismiss a horse ad on horse colour - if it sounds the type of horse I want (good temperament, all-rounder, 14.3-16hh), in the right area, within my budget then I'd be arranging a viewing. I've not had the pleasure of becoming an owner yet though, and I can't wait for it to happen! I am surely destined to fall in love for a dark bay by the sounds of it though! lol.

I always enjoyed washing and grooming the ponies at my last yard (the even-tempered ones at least), so have never been phased by the idea of owning my dream dapple grey ID and washing it all the time. Maybe the novelty wears off when you're doing it almost daily rather than at weekends though! lol.
