Hello there,

Following on from lots of colour questions recently, I thought I would ask what colour you think my 11 month old colt is.

I am by no means any colour expert- but he doesnt actually look bay. When he was born he had zebra stripes on his legs, and a dorsal stripe and shoulder stripes. He is a strange mousy colour.

I hope you can see from the photos the shoulder marks- the dorsal stripe is there still but dont know if you can see it. His mane and tail are actually dark brown not black.

I am just interested as I can't tell!

Thank you

lovely fella
im no colour expert either only what ive been reading on here
alot of foals are born with the dorsel stripe but soon fades
what colour was his parents
i would say either bay/brown or even a dark buckskin..the only way to know for sure is to get him tested

Hi there,

Yes I thought he could be brown maybe a funny coloured buckskin but I don't know about all the genetics with the colourings! Maybe someone on here would be able to tell me.

His stripe is still there at 11 months.

His mum is bay and his dad is black/dark bay.

This is his pedigree if any colour people are able to look at the colours:

Definately no duns or that sort of thing in the pedigree.

We are a bit stumped as he really does not look bay

Thank you

To be buckskin (or another dilute) or dun he would have to have a dilute or dun parent. Do you know if the sire or dam have ever thrown a definite dilute foal? I can't see any dilutes in his pedigree though not all the colours are there.

Is dilute palomino and that sort if thing? Sorry if I appear to be numpty but have never looked at horse colours really.

The missing colours in pedigree are chesnut, black and dark bay. Hence we are a little suprised with his colour.

What is sooty? Would he still be bay with a brown mane?

He is the first foal from mare, and the sire has had chestnuts (Vigo is chesnut- his Dad) and bays.

Thank you!!
