Coloured Horses - All have marking on Flanks??

No particular point to this question but I was just wondering why a lot, and I mean a LOT if not 95%, of coloured horses have a marking/colour on their flanks??? :confused:

Is there a genetic reason for this?? Or something about the foal in the womb which means pigment heads to that area??

Moreover, does anyone have a coloured without marked flanks?? Pictures please!:)
 
my coloured does have bay markings on his flanks but my friends coloured only has a couple of small markings on the neck, head and shoulder. He has no markings on his flanks they are just white/grey.

I have no idea about the genetics side of things!
 
Not sure about that - I have two piebalds, one is marked quite evenly all over so I guess that fits. The other is black with white socks, star and a white patch on her shoulder/withers.... Can't remember the official name for her markings though!

The freezemarker is coming in a couple of weeks and mentioned she sees a lot of "coloured" horses who are white all over, with colour only on their heads. A lot of the small, hairy, heavy cob types living on gypsy land near one of the county hospitals are marked like that. They are really not attractive, although that's probably due more to their terrible conformation than their colour :(
