Coloured horses question

Been looking at some pictures of various types and breeds of piebalds and skewbalds. Got me thinking, what determines what coloured patches go where? I don't know if true or not, or even if it can be proved , but does it relates to how the foetus lays/positions and the temperature differences between the wall of the uterus or 'further in'!?
And, why do ''most'' coloured horses have white legs and more often than not a blaze of some sort?

Excluding appaloosa there are three main genetic combinations which control patchiness... sabino, tobiano and overo

The actual placement of the patches is not determined by anything but luck - just like spotty cats or dogs

RE spotty cats. If you look at my poor little beast you can see that his spots are actually stripes that are broken. You could colour in the gaps with dye to make him tabby.
