Just out of interest

Would you have had or did you have a coloured horse 10 years or more ago?

Looking at information about years gone by not many people had them as I am a coloured horse convert never having a coloured horse and now having a yard full I wondered what peoples thoughts are or were on coloureds horses in past years.

I bought my coloured mare 11 years ago.....I have a gelding now too.....

I didn't buy them *because* they were coloured.....colour wasn't an issue.....

I had a lovely coloured for about 5 years, i bought him because i really like him his colour didnt cross my mind at all.

I love coloureds and really wanted one, but I found Nell instead and bought her.
My late mare gave birth to a stunning piebald filly back in 1993, she is now owned by a lovely lady on this forum in fact.
They were always very popular and fetched the highest prices at the sales years ago, I love them, and if I can afford a second one day I will get a coloured traditional :)

When I was younger (40 years ish ago) they were seen as quite common. At the riding school I used to help at they frequently appeared from the local dealers yard to be used and sold on. They were all cobby types anything up to 16 hands but not as flashy as todays traddys. A long flowing mane and feathers just wasn't practical so most were hogged and feathers trimmed off. They made good school horses so tended to remain there while solid colour horses got sold on.

Yep had my first coloured cob 11years or so ago, he was one of two at the yard at the time. Now their are lots at the local yards, I still love them and am lucky enough to have another coloured to show off :-)

Have had a coloured horse for 30 years, always loved them, even if it was just keeping one for hunting etc. Now have a coloured dressage horse!

I rode a fabulous one in Pembrokeshire called Harriet in 1994 and wanted one ever since. Took 18 years and now I have one not dissimilar to her in a lot of ways :)

I didn't like coloureds and didn't understand what all the fuss was about. Never wanted one and never looked at them when browsing adverts. Then I saw an advert on Facebook - the lady I bought my Sec. C colt from was selling an incredibly hairy coloured. SO not my type but I fell in love! He is the nicest sweetest horse and I adore him. Am now a bit of a coloured convert :)

I LOVE coloured horses...I wouldnt normally buy a horse just because of its colour but I have to admit that was the bit that drew me to going to look at my ISH x WB youngster...and he is gorgeous. I will confess that had he been bay or chestnut I quite probably wouldnt have looked twice at him :o
(Not that I have anything against those colours, my other two horses are a light bay and an iron grey).

You sound just like me, I've got a coloured ISH, a grey Hanoverian/Tb and a dark bay ID/TB.

I recently purchased a coloured youngster earlier this year. Went to see a few youngsters and when I phoned to ask if I could get the coloured vetted and explained that I'd seen a few youngsters but fell in love with her. The owner was shocked and asked what else I'd been looking at as she wasn't aware of any other coloureds for sale in area. She was very taken aback when I said a I wasn't specifically looking for a coloured just a nice youngster. Surprised me that she thought she was selling to a niche market and would be purchased primarily on colour. My other horse is a dun TBxConn (very fine) had him 16yrs, again fell in love with personality and hadn't considered his colour until people commented on his unusual colour Vs build and stature. Both are fantastic horses but wouldn't have purchased either based on colour although I do thankfully love the colours they are.

I had one on loan from RS when I was 16.. First horse I ever really loved and lost, and my only cob..

And took on my RIs event bred Irish coloured last year for sales livery.. In the end she didn't sell her and is eventing her herself.. Lovely mare, half Arab..

Its like all things......boils down to fashion!
Until recently it was coloureds.....before that greys.....before that palomino's.....
TBH whilst I have a coloured, I did not set out to buy one....infact I was dead set I was NOT buying a coloured
He was the only one that ticked the boxes on the day and he came home.
The next one WILL be a mud coloured one.....

When I bought my Irish Draught x I was hellbent on having a coloured....but went to see this grey thing lol (I dont normally 'do' greys) and had a cuddle of him and fell in love. He is iron grey and very striking and definately my horse of a lifetime, the bond I have with him is incredible (just dont tell me other two boys:o) So its definately true that a good horse is never a bad colour...though I must say it would have to be crapping diamonds before I could bring myself to look at a light grey/palamino/cremello though :p;)

Interesting thread.

I think looking back ten years is not enough.

When I was at PC, thirty years ago, there wasn't a single coloured, that I can remember. About 25yrs ago I started working with horses, in the local riding school, and there were three coloureds there, all cobby, and all fantastic types. If they ever went to shows, they did very well. A lot of us had palominos at pc (myself included) whereas you hardly see them nowadays! It is fashion.

Just give your boy time... he'll grey out to light grey and give you lots and lots of grooming fun. ;) :D

It is interseting to see peoples thoughts and how a coloured horse lover seems to always say a coloured horse lover. It also seems many peoples thoughts have changed if they werent a coloured horse lover - the world finely is either starting to except them or has excepted them.

My sister got her first coloured pony over 20 years ago, he was called spike and was ace. Her most recent purchase is also a coloured

I've got a grey - more fool me! :D

Got my first coloured off a dealer when i was 11 - took him to HOYS in 1999.

Have now had about 20 of them over the years!

Took a coloured to a producer many years ago and was told no i would never have a coloured in my yard! She had three at HOYS this year.... and we always make a point of saying it!
