Hi All,

Sorry if ive posted this in the wrong place...

I have a lovely little pony which I wonder wether she could be successful in in hand coloured pony classes? We took part in a local fun show which she did come first in however I wonder if she could be competitive in 'more serious' classes if that makes sense?

Shes a lovely quiet pony and carries herself well as long as shes not feeling lazy 🙈 i believe her confirmation is pretty good? Does she have enough colour? Also her breeding is unknown but we believe she is part welsh c so would she be classed as native? Sorry so many questions!

I just have very little experience in showing so would love to hear people's thoughts.

Although I have done some showing, I've not owned a coloured so can't really help with that side of things. She looks lovely though! I would wear dark trousers for showing as your pony has white legs. It will show her off better. Good luck!

Have a look an see if you have any showing clinics running local to you. You can go as a spectator to some. It will give you an idea of how best to present you pony.

Look at CHAPS. My dad did help establish the society in the very very early days but things have evolved so much since then. We used to have a plaited and an unplaited class and that was it, maybe split by height when the numbers started to build.

Markings should not come into the judging unless it comes down to 2 horses of equal quality that the judge can not pick between (or at least this is how it used to be). Imagine the horse a solid colour and judge the confirmation that way - markings can often give the illusion of incorrect confirmation/wonkiness.

Good luck - most of all it's about having fun!

Do you have a local Riding Club you could join? Mine holds showing practise days this time of year.

Shes a very pretty pony but her conformation isnt the best, very typical cob conformation, bum high, sloping croup and not the best hindlimbs. Shes also not a traditional but not really a native either so in coloured cob showing shes not right for either type.

Ive seen much, much worse conformation, but she wont be competitive at higher levels. You will have a lot of fun at local level though.

I have been dabbling in shows with a friend for the last few years and my general impression is that if your horse has no recorded breeding, and within that isn't bred to be a successful show horse, there is no point worrying about "success". People pour tens of thousands of pounds, likely more, into getting a horse that will win reliably even at local level and that isn't what I have, what my friend has or what you have so just go showing if you enjoy it!

I have a cob type with no recorded breeding and was advised by the Cob showing people I know to just put her in part bred classes. Like my girl, if you put her in a Welsh class she isn't Welsh enough and won't be hairy enough for a trad cob class!
