Having just read on another thread that Welsh part-breds should be shown pulled and plaited, I wondered how I should show my boy. He's Welsh D x Traditional and basically looks like a coloured welsh D. He's always been entered in coloured classes as a native/traditional and left natural, but being PBW should he be plaited? Or natural for coloured classes and plaited for PBW classes? Confused now

Would be easier to say if could see a pic of him, but from his breeding i would say leave natural and show as a native type. my friend shows her welsh part bred coloured natural and qualified for ri twice in the coloureds, and ridden him in part bred classes withour plaits with success too. if you think yours will look silly plaited then leave his mane lose, just make it look tidy like the welshes are turned out xx

If you show as a coloured, if he's of hairy build which he sounds like then as that. Welsh part breds are shown plaited though- but at U/A if he's hairy go with that rather than trying to plait a full mane :)

Thanks for your replies, I meant to post a picture but left it off somehow!
This is he as a 3yo, he's 6 now but not much chunkier:

and excuse the awful photo but this is the only one I have on photobucket showing his mane

Another thing to take into account is his knee action,if he has alot of knee action he would look out of place in some classes, but more a home in coloured native classes.Love his medicine cap,he looks a sweetie x

Echo this - looking at the photo, show him as a coloured native type - they are not expected to have the great feather from the knee as traditional cobs do, and are generally pulled to around 6-8'' and a bit lighter all round.

If you want to show him as a part bred welsh, in part bred welsh classes, he would need to be plaited but as a word of warning these classes are generally full of small brown shiney plaited ponies, hunter and SP types!

Thanks for that, from the bspa info he's large native type. Computer won't let me open the chaps one for some reason :(

We generally only show him locally, always coloured classes as there generally aren't any part-bred welsh classes anyway. His mane was pulled over winter as he rubbed loads out and looks better as it is now (about 6") than short or very long I think.

In answer to some of the other questions, he's 14.1hh , and yes he is technically a coloured but some judges seem to disagree. He's won a few classes where the judges seemed to not be looking at markings, and placed last in others where he was apparently not coloured enough :p I think he's a Marmite pony!
He moves very much like a welsh cob, so I think he'd look out of place in an shp class, not dainty enough!
