My cousin has a serious illness so I have taken her youngster on to sell for her. She is a 4 year old kwpn coloured mare that I think is good enough to show but would a small splint rule out a showing career? I need to write an advert for her but I'm not sure how to describe her. So many adverts say 'good allrounder' or 'riding club\ pony club'. She is very well bred and a complete sweetheart, schooling well, hacked out in company and is jumping small fences. Do you think £5000 is optimistic?

Sounds way, way out.

What has the horse done showing/competition wise? Sounds a lot for a green horse that has done nothing and still managed to get a splint.

pm me some pictures so i can have a look please as im looking. Re the splint really depends how big, yes ideally the judge would mark the horse down but on saying that if the horse goes really well gives judge good ride it could do pretty well locally, just not maybe as high in Chaps classes.

Thanks for your comments. I'm in a difficult position as she would love me to keep her horse and compete her but I really havent got the time to do her justice. I feel so sorry that she is so ill and I wish I could do more to help her, that I really want to do a a good job of schooling and selling her horse.

Google it.

£5000 is a lot if you think about the state of the horse market. If you are selling the horse as a show animal, then the splint will have a massive effect on the price, even though it may not actually affect the horses showing carreer, I show horses and I wouldnt touch a horse with a splint! Its a risk! However if your selling the animal as a nice riding club type that will go out and jump and event etc then you'll have more luck. But still £5000 is a lot! We're selling a lovely TB mare at the mo, and she's worth about £4500 but doubt we'll get £3500 as the state of the market is so poor.

I've just PM'd you

"google it" how rude, this is a forum where people ask and learn. the amount of effort it took you to write your thoughts on the price you could have answered. anyway my equine vet friend is now here so no need to google it THANKS. really though thanks to the other nicer members

I disagree with some of you - if the horse is good enough, a splint won't prevent a showing career at all. Many of the top horses in the country have small (and not so small) splints and blemishes. I've qualified 2 horses for HOYS with splints.

There will, ofcourse, be some judges who will dump a horse with a splint, and this may affect the price slightly, but not significantly IMO.

The horse's showing/competition record and overall conformation is much more a determinant of it's value. I know it's the credit crunch now, so a bit different, but I sold a similar sounding coloured mare to yours last year. She had a splint but had a fab temperament and jump, was going well and at 4 years old had been to 3-4 shows with good results. She was sold for 5k.

Mine has been placed at county level with a splint as a 3yr old. As it is, that one disappeared with time. SPlints are not the be all and end all IMHO! Wouldnt/shouldnt effect her as a RC allrounder horse, you just have to get her out and about to show she is worth that money.

a splint is a separation of "cartlidge"/bone sround the splint area on the inside of the front cannon bone..

it was BELIEVED to of been the result of overwork/working on hard ground in young and under developed horses...

but this isnt always the case

i had a youngster who threw 2 enormous splints just being in the paddock..

by the age of 3 he'd, luckily, absorbed them both!!

as for ending its showing career...i wouldnt have thought so.............

It annoys me when people hijack threads, just google it or create a new thread. I'm glad you "equine vet friend" is now able to assist.

I agree that the splint may not affect the horses showing career, but it will affect its sale value.

Personally I think the splint will effect her value, esp if she is to be shown, My coloured has a splint and I no longer show him due the the face it has put me down the placings too often, I now event him. If I was buying her as a RC/alrounder it will only effect her value slightly, Can we have more info on what she has done/how she is bred and a picture so make it easier to value her?
