Any coloured showing experts out there? My sister has recently bought a 14hh 4 year old New Forest x Coloured Cob gelding for my niece, he is eligible for CHAPS registration and on his passport is classed a Tobiano? This is our first coloured pone and we know very little about showing this type. We would like to show him a little bit (only local level for now) and are getting conflicting information on how he should be turned out. I read on the CHAPS website that he would be classed as a Pony Native so should be shown "au naturel", but we took him to an in hand show at the weekend and whilst the judge loved him (he has fab movement for his type) and placed him first out of 10, she said that he should have his feathers off and be plaited up. As this was only a small local show, we are not going to jump into taking this advice, but wondered if anyone knew the correct turnout for him?

Personally I think he is better left natural because then he is suprising, as he looks like a bog standard coloured pony, but when he moves he has a bit of wow factor that you don't expect for his type, however, if pulled and trimmed to look more mainstream, his movement won't have enough WOW to compete again the more TB types. However, we want to turn him out correctly whatever that entails and are happy to trim him up if that is what is needed.

Opinions please, this is a photo of him last year before we had him.........

I'll be interested to read others advice on this as I am having the same conflicting reports with my coloured. I want to trim his feathers off and plait him as I think it looks so much smarter. I'm just hesitating in case people say he should have his feathers left on. BTW he is gorgeous!!

It difficult to see how much feather he has on those photos, he doesnt look like he has alot of bone so you could get away with trimming and plaiting or if he has long feather from the knee then yes it would be classed as tradtional/au natural his mane long etc, if he has just tufts from his fetlocks then i would say trim them off and pull his mane and plait it, or the 3rd option legs off and hogged but tbh every judge has a different opinion, go with what your happiest with. Ive shown my mare clipped and hogged and now as a hairy mary and had varying success with both. Good luck he looks lovely.. Most important thing is HAVE FUN""

I used to show a large coloured. It will depend on what the judge likes. Some shows we were up the top of the line and some the bottom depending on whether the judge liked hairies or not.

It is really up to you, don't be put off because of what one judge has said.

Thank you all for your advice, in that case we might leave him be for now and see how its goes. I'm usually a trim them and plait them type, but to be honest, it was quite nice having an easier pre show turnout with this one!!!

Thanks very much Theresa for that link - I have a feeling it will come in very handy, as not used to showing this type of pony!

Thanks, I've just registered as "Nemo" - as that is the pony's name. Certainly a mind blowing amount of coloured information - its a world that I hardly knew existed before now!!!

Have to say that so far we have been extremely impressed with our little coloured pony, he has far exceeded expectations and is fantastically well behaved for his age and experience. If that's what you get with coloureds, than I will certainly be looking twice when horse hunting next time!! (I've always been a bit traditional and bay horse kind of girl!)
