Coloured stallion - opinions please.

One of my broodmares won't travel (rears and not worth stressing her out), my friend has a coloured stallion that I was going to put on her as he will bring him to me. What do you think?

He has a fab temperment and moves nicely too. Hunted all day yesterday. I can see a few faults but wondered your opinions.
 
I suppose it depends what purpose you want the foal for, I think he's a very nice looking horse and my far from experienced eye can't spot anything that would cause a major problem
 
Nice horse, does he have any proven record. Is he fertile, has he covered before, what are his other babies like.

If he has covered is he 'clean' from disease.

If the mare won't travel what would happen if her and baby needed to go to hospital.
 
He doesn't look a bad sort does he, you could do a lot worse? Only snag I can see is registering the foal (although you can use CHAPS anyway) if the stallion's not papered up himself unless that doesn't matter although it might if you want to sell it. They used to travel stallions to mares all the time years ago didn't they?
Do you know his breeding at all?
 
Have you thought about having her AI'd by your vet? Just thinking, as then you could have whatever stallion you liked best.

He looks a nice sort of horse though. Has he covered mares before, and if so have you seen any of his progeny?
 
I like him, not 100% sure on the hind quarters and looks very straight in the front legs, possibly tied in under the knee? hard to tell in the pic. Quite long in the back too.
Whats the mare like?
You obviously know him so can see what faults there are in the flesh and whether they would effect the foal.
 
He is a very pleasant looking horse but I'm with IrishCob on this one - not sure I like his conformation enough. My eyes were drawn to his front legs which don't look great, but could be the way he was clipped or the photo perhaps.
A friend of mine is having her mare AI'd - may be a better option?
 
what is the mare like, what sort of foals is he throwing from similar mares?
i dont particularly like him myself, he is a nice horse but nice doesnt cut it for me for a stud.
agree about the AI-your choice would be huge if you went down this route and you would potentially get a much improved match.

He's 10y.o, was brought over from Oz. His first foal is due soon so not sure on progeny yet.

My mare is 16.3hh Tb(mainly bred TB's for racing) she's getting on a bit so I don't want to spend masses on AI (AI package without an average stud fee is £550+ with my equine vets) to end up with a bill and no foal, plus if Jen is here I'd like to spend more on putting her to a decent stallion as I know she produces nice stuff!

The aim isn't to breed a world beater else I wouldn't use him, or the mare for that fact, just want a nice tempered, nice looking allrounder with decent enough conformation.

He is regd, he's a QH x Paint, I know nothing about their bloodlines so they mean nothing to me.

I know, thats what happened, stallions would come to the mares, they'd go all around the farms, how things change ay!

Have you finished hunting yet? We had out last meet yesterday, up on the moor/mountain, OH is sooo pleased with his cob, he's perfect. We had three antis (if you can call them that) which was fun, only antis we've seen all season, they really don't like it when you start photographing THEM do they

To be honest I'm always loathe to criticise anyone's stallion as they all have their faults...
I like his head but his back end doesn't thrill me. Something about his legs, perhaps because they appear very upright and a little weak from the hock downwards ?
He is very short backed but that can be a blessing as well as a curse!
I think he would breed a nice ordinary sort of horse for which there is a ready market; you will all have heard me banging on about not everyone wants a world beater.
We got a local mare once because it wouldn't travel, it used to catch in foal then lose it after the stressful box journey home. We were 7 miles away so she hacked it back both times, and both times got a live foal..

I think I'd give this lad a go to see what results, either way it will be saleable, he's got a lovely face and has proved to be a sound sensible sort.
 
Do you know it really depends on your mare, if she has the same flts then they are going to come through in the foal. I agree with other comments, he seems a bit upright in his pasterns, but if your mare is long in the pastern, then perhaps it wont matter. Sorry not my cup of tea.
 
sorry but a 'marriage of convenience is not the reason to breed. This is done far too much in this country. I appreciate that you want to breed from her but there are other avenues that you could explore like A.I. if your mare is worth breeding from then this would be an option to explore or , i know you say she doesnt travel well you could leave her at a good stud for a period of time , ie to get her into foal and go through the first scan.
As for the stallion for a start he does not look 'male' enough , he is also very srtaight in the hind leg and even slightly sickle hocked he is also back at the knee in his fore limbs. All these conforational weaknesses could be passed on and would affect the ability of any offspring to do a job later in life.
This is the reason that we have grading for stallions and performance testing to help reduce the lottery that breeding can sometimes be. There are good coloured stallions out there, see h and h a couple of weeks ago available AI would be Samber A KWPN stallion, Standhopes Diddicoy and I think his son Odwig but Im not sure on that one.

Partoo, I worked on one of the largest UK trakehner studs with 3 graded stallions and a high number of Premium mares, having dealt with over 100 pink papered and branded horses I also know that the best does not always breed the best so no need for the above comments.

If either were bad tempered or had injuries then I wouldn't be considering it.

Not everyone in this country wants a world beater that can take them to the top, so who caters for the 'allrounder' niche?

I agree 110% with you. My very ordinary little mare has been put to a lovely little stallion - and what am I after????

A GOOD ALLROUNDER!
 
Just a thought have you got a nice Sec D near you that would travel to you.
Nice allrounder Welsh D X TB and very fashionable .
Fetch good money private and at the sales and Welsh PB papers.
Probably way off the mark here and you want to breed coloured.
If so ignore .
