I love my coloured mare-but its so hard to keep up with the other livery owners and to keep her looking clean and smart!
I don't want to keep hosing her legs!
Please share your tips for keeping your coloured horse clean everyday!

i bath my horse once each year, but i use a bucket and a dandy brush in between times for stable stains.
i never wash my horses legs in the winter, i just let them dry off overnight and brush off in the morning.

Best way ness97 is to buy yourself a pair of dark glasses so you can't see it! As a task, it rates higher than painting the Forth Bridge, ie by the time you've got the last little bit clean you've got to start back at the beginning again.

PS: OMG christi - what a totally awesome and stunning horse!

We have a grey

& he uses poo as a pillow so every morning he comes out the stable looking like a patchwork poo quilt

I think the only way to avoid the mess is to buy a bay?

My gypsy cob is scrubbed day before a show - well the white bits are and I just use water on the dark bay areas to keep them with natural oils and glossy.

Winter - the legs are covered in pig oil and sulphur. They clean up enough for dressage/SJ with a hot towel on the body and the legs are brushed out - the mud slides off the oil. If I am showing then I do wash out the legs and the white section of mane as well as the hot towelling.

Cowboy magic is a great spot cleaner for hocks etc.

You could:

1. get a solid dark coloured horse
2. Never turn out and muck out stable ever time they go to the loo
3. Invest in a snuggy spic and span.

Or do as I do, turn them out and accept that whilst coloureds are wonderful, they are never going to be as clean looking as dark solid horses.

Actually mine do wear snuggy bodies for the mild SI and it does keep the body clean. I only use the hood for when they are cleaned up ready for a show as they can stay out in them and keep clean.

All I can suggest is to keep on top of the stains. Cowboy Magic Stain remover is brilliant. If you have a white tail to deal with, keep it in plaits - keeps the poo out of it and they still have something to waft about.
If you stable your horse, use turnout rugs as stable rugs - the stains don't go through.

Oh yes, a coloured after you have spent several hours scrubbing and whitening looks wonderful - I meant everyday looks - my chap gets the white areas grubby very quickly. One day he is Quite by Chance and 10 mins later in the field, back to Stinky.

Tailbags are essential parts of my gear - keeps the tail in wonderful condition and when you have a thick tail like a gypsy cob or clydesdale, saves hours of time in washing and brushing out.

Final tip - get a coloured with a black tail, forelock and mane - I did

and so much better than my last mare who was all white in these areas.

I dont have a coloured atm, but I do have a white mare!
My answer chalk!!!!
I make it into a paste with water, then put it on up to her elbows and stifles after she has had a bath, legs then bandaged and a hood on!
But dont get the chalk in the tail as it dulls it!!
Here are some pics on facebook, some clever person can put them on here if you want!!

A very damp pony but you can see the line and once dried all looks pristine!!

I LOVE this photo!!!

My solution was to move somewhere with not a lot of rain, and snow on the ground for about 4 months of each year. Sandy soil helps too because they certainly don't get groomed often enough to keep them clean

You are doomed if you have clay
