Colours for liver chestnuts?

My mare turned from regular boring old chestnut (actually I love chestnuts and I take that back!) to a very deep, liver chestnut this summer. She’s nine so I have no idea why she changed this late - could he change of climate/country (she came from Denmark in January).

I’m thinking of getting her an Equitex pad soon, and even if I don’t, I’m curious what colours people think look good on a liver chestnut. She might change back to a more regular dark chestnut in winter (I haven’t seen her in her winter coat yet this season so I don’t know) but I’m still curious (obviously a bit bored or finding a reason not to go to bed).

Especially with her flaxen mane and tail I think - bleached by the sun. Sadly a bit of it has been rubbed out because of sweetitch but next spring I’ll take precautionary measures.

I liked light blue on my liver chestnut. He too went very dark, almost black, in the summer and his winter coat was more dark reddish so the light blue suited both coat colours. If I can find a photo I will post.

Definitely dark green, but burgundy and dark teal might also look good if you wanted more than one.

Hmm I am thinking she's beautiful and doesn't need a bright saddle pad t detract. I'd go something like warm middle grey or whatever is similar to her mane

Oooohhh she is scrumptious!!!!

I would say any of the following colours (depends on how bright you like colours etc)

Light Blue
Purple
Bottle Green
Lime Green
Grey
Navy
Cream/Champagne (this kind of colour would also match her mane & tail)
White (at your own risk as it would get dirty rather fast!)
Turquoise

My two boys are Appaloosas with light base colouring so I have pretty much every colour you can think of - my poor bank account hates it whenever there's a sale on aha!

What a gorgeous colour! Lucky you! My chestnut is glow in the dark ginger so anything but black, navy or bottle green just looks like a rainbow has thrown up on him or he's of to some 80's reunion neon disco!!

As other have said I like green on a chestnut, but I think you will get away with most colour's on your mare.

I always pick a pad to go with the tack as well as the horse. I like what others have suggested about cream or a color to go with her mane. (Altho' a tiny part of me is picturing fuchsia. Not that I would go with it. Except for a Fun Day.)

Love brown but I learned a hard lesson early on that they are much harder to sell on so nowadays I chose black. Brown does look more beautiful on a chestnut though!

She is lovely. My mare is a bit more red than yours and has a flaxen mane and tail. She looks good in bottle green, cream, navy, sky blue, black and brown.

I hope she stays dark now even as she gets fluffier for winter. I haven’t seen her for quite a few weeks but I’ll see her next week (vet before the move). I can’t wait to be able to take better photos in my own time, might even get a professional photo shoot done this winter. She’s such a beautiful horse.
