Colt in with mares?

A lot of previous posts on here about it.
Its entirely possible that a weanling colt can cover a mare or filly he is out with.
Its not 'usual' but can and does happen, sometimes even if his balls havent dropped.
Most responsible breeders separate sexes on weaning. For 1st winter if not gelded by then could be put in with a gelding for company.
Most colts are gelded as soon as everything has dropped.
 
My Shagya colt, now an approved stallion, was put back with his dam, in foal and another in foal mare, after weaning until he was two.

He is really nice and well behaved with mares, I think it did him good and we had no problems with him. I should say he did not become really amorous until 3 years old.
 
However, neighbours of ours who didn't want to get colt gelded (male neighbour felt sorry for him...) said that, in fact, foal showed no interest in his mother al winter and even the following spring.

Why? Because he'd already covered her and got her in foal......
 
There is a colt out with our babyponies (all boys). It's done him the world of good to be out with others and learn about socialisation etc without the worry of birth control.

In the wild they'd be off with a bachelor herd pretty much as soon as they left their dams.
 
I did keep my colt with my broodmares from when he was a yearling to just before he was two years old. However, he was rather henpecked by the girls and is only just starting to become a man as he goes into his third year.
