iv just bought a just turned 2 colt, he however has one testicle.. i have read up on this and some say they can still drop after this but most drop before 1 year.his descended one isnt overlly large? should i give him a bit more time before thinking of sending him to be castrated? he isnt colty at all, infact still quite mouthy and babyish, also what are peoples experiences of this ie costs? iv been quoted around 1k if the other is retained, vet coming out to have a proper feel this week! thanks:D

hi
my 18 month old had only one testicle which was enormous , he required surgery , second one was high up in his abdomen , surgery was done at our local vets , cost me £465

From what I researched regarding my colt (same problem) if it hasn't descended by now, it is unlikely to without intervention.

My boy had the same issue - he's rising two and I had him surgically castrated in April.

I would shop around for quotes, the centre I would have chosen initially quoted upwards of £1000 (eek!), but rang another equine practise and they quoted the following...

£450 - if scrotal
£650 - if inguinal
£850 - if abdominal.

This was cost inclusive of vat, and all drugs (for standard procedure).

My boy was inguinal - and I had £30 extra on top as they had to sedate him during the initial manual and ultrasound scan as he was intent on returning the favour to the vet!

He had nothing to eat from midnight on the day of surgery, went in to vets first thing and came home the next day. Recovered very well after surgery too - was really surprised that it didn't set him back at all.

You may have to wait until autumn now - because of the flies, but I would def recommend shopping around for quotes!
