Fugly sadly has been kicked in the field again this week (again
mad.gif
). To borrow a phrase from Baydale he runs up to the other horses like a Great Dane puppy - legs everywhere and tongue lolling out and the other horses just go 'yeah, whatever' and boot him
frown.gif
. Hence every time I go to catch him I'm looking for the next wound
frown.gif
. So the Combined Training today was always going to be touch and go but having paid £36 of entry fees in advance fairly galvanises the spirit and 2 days of constant icing and antibiotics resulted in a cold hard leg when I turned up to muck out at 5.30 this morning
smile.gif
.

Being of a superstitious nature I decided not to learn the tests in advance on the basis that if I did he'd be lame. I was slight;y
crazy.gif
on arrival to discover that P4 involves 3
shocked.gif
centre lines - not a strong point - and P10 has half 10m circles and cantering across the diagonal
crazy.gif
.

P4 didn't go well. To be fair I'd forgotten that this was only his 2nd ever test. I was surprised to see continuous boards all around the arena - and so was Fugly
smirk.gif
though luckily once he'd been round the outside once he was cool with them
cool.gif
. The walk and trot work was OK, if a little short in outline but the canter is a weak point at the mo. The first canter went pretty much: ask for L canter, horse runs off then obliges half a marker later with R canter. Back to trot, re-establish L canter then loses balance on the cicle and changes behind..... trot again, L canter again.....
frown.gif
crazy.gif
. Big horse, small arena

Luckily he went in for the SJing, spent the entire round on the correct lead, changed when asked and jumped a lovely clear

During the break the dressage judge came to find me to let me know that her and her write had both voted my horse 'horse they'd most like to take home', and also that although they could see he was very green they thought he had the most potential they'd seen all day
grin.gif
grin.gif
.

So.... onto the second class and P10. I stayed in my jumping saddle and let my stirrups down a bit as I felt his canter was sooo much better in the SJing warm up than the dressage. All I can say is WOW... what a fab test. I love this horse
grin.gif
.
Comment was 'Much better test!' and the score was 10 marks better
grin.gif
.

He was tiring a bit for the SJing (85cm). The height is well within his capabilities, it's just sorting the canter between fences. I thought we had 1 down, the results said 2 but I didn't complain as I don't like to be awkward and it didn't really matter. The jumping from the first class with the dressage from the second would have had us in the top 3 in either class. As it was we were 7th in both

.

I have a problem with the horse in that I have invested heavily in him in my expectations, hopes and ambitions. I feel that he is really special (he is going SOOOO well at home) and I put a lot of pressure on my self and get extremely disappointed with anything less than 100%. Because he is so sensible I forget how young and green he is.

OK, because I'm a masochist here are the dressage pics from P4 - the dodgy test - please navigate forwards and backwards through them, there are quite a few!!. I know he is too short in his outline !

And a jumping one - the front legs need to improve (his and mine!) but he gives you a lovely feel over a fence:

Thank you all. I think I keep forgetting that he is only 4, and a green 4 at that
crazy.gif
. He is just so lovely and sensible that you are sometimes tempted to ask him for more.

He's looking really good
smile.gif
I know what you mean re. the expectations, but slowly slowly catch the monkey
wink.gif
Least you're out doing dressage, we darent at the mo
wink.gif
Jumping is SO more our thing
tongue.gif
wink.gif
Love his "superman" impression over the fences
tongue.gif

Yeah well at least his knees are up, the 'foreleg dangle' is yet to come. Luckily he jumps extra big to compensate (hence why I look like we're jumping 1.20m!).

Just need someone to yell at me to sit up during dressage tests

What a dude!
Well done

Aw, shucks

. Can we see some pics of Snoops soon please?

Its no consolation but my horse spent a year learning about horses body language the hard way. He just did not understand tail swishing and ears back! He is now very switched on and no longer comes in with big legs, cuts and bites all over his neck! He even found his first field mate to bully this year.

He looks a dude and like he will be fun. I have found the book Riding for Success a great help in dealing with horses and the ups and downs of putting yourself under so much pressure.

I just love this horse. You ride him very sympathetically. The dangly legs don't matter, I reckon it because he is sensible, he knows he doesn't need to tuck them at low heights. I bet he tucks as the fences get bigger.

Don't beat yourself up, you are doing a good job with him.

Ooooh,I love horses with white legs and a blaze.......
laugh.gif

And I love his 'Whoopee!' expression over the fence!
grin.gif

Bring him to me,and he can even have his OWN field!!!
wink.gif

He looks fab, like he's loving it (more the jumping than the dressage...
wink.gif
) and really well too.

Don't forget to have fun with him, or the pursuit of your expectations, hopes and ambitions will be a long and frustrating journey.
crazy.gif
Maybe buying another one would take the pressure off Fugs?

He is looking good. Don't worry about the dangling legs, the knees are up, and as he gets stronger and his technique improves, he will make a tidier shape!
Wasn't it lovely of the dressage judge to find you and boost your confidence like that?
I agree with Baydale, it will be a very slow painful journey if you take it too seriously!

well done GB! i think its hard when you only really have the one horse that
a) you have high expectations of because they are talented
b) you are hoping will take you as far as you want to go

my horse is similar (altho not as nice as fugly
wink.gif
)- he's really mature for a 4 year old and because he's a pocket sized horse he's especially very balanced in his flatwork- but then i get annoyed when he can't do things- i forget that he's 4 and not 8 and have to be reminded at times
crazy.gif
If he was a complete mentalist all of the time maybe i'd appreciate his age more
tongue.gif
i think you should be really pleased with him so far- he looks fab on the jumping pics, you are doing a great job
smile.gif
grin.gif

He is looking fab!!! I haven't seen any pics of him since the hairy ones when he first arrived at yours so the response is a very big "WOW" No wonder the judges wanted to steal him, so do I
wink.gif

Lovely Fugly
smile.gif
smile.gif
smile.gif
And FWIW I agree with Thistle, he's got his knees up and I think he realises how small the fences are and isn't trying over-hard (I'm not suggesting you go bigger, just that I wouldn't be worried about the fold)

Jesus, what a bloo*y lovely horse
grin.gif
Can't wait to see him after the winter when he has come on a little more. You must be thrilled, he looks absolutely super! Well done!

Awww I love fuggles
smile.gif
Don't be hard on your self or disappointed I think he's doing fab and he is only a baby, and if he is a green 4 then he's doing very well! He has changed soo much since your initial post I think he's going to be a star!
smile.gif

Hey, they are good piccies & Fuggles looks really, really well. He is an absolutely lovely horse & whatever results you get with him just now should be considered a bonus as he wont be anything like the 'real deal' for another year or so yet.

You just need to curb your competitive nature & concentrate on the bigger picture!

That looks like a nice venue - lucky ole you!

He looks great and I'm sure the rosettes are not far off for either of you
smile.gif
I totally hear what you are saying about him going better in your jumping saddle. That is clearly an edict from on high to indicate that you should purchase a similar dressage saddle to ensure maximum marks at all times... Having received similar instruction from my own horse, I can but obey..
