I’m looking for a new turnout fit my retired horse. He lives out with my friends who loves velcro ?
Most of my current rugs are detachable necks, all Velcro and if they stay on at all they at least get undone, it’s often found trampled into the mud.

So, I’m after a 200g fill or thereabouts. 1000+denier to withstand the play.
Then I thought some rugs have buckles on the neck which I actually dislike but think in this situation might work. Then preferably a fixed neck, possibly zipped but not the usual Velcro.
Any suggestions to look at?
He’s TB but not a scrawny type so regular fit.
Pref not hugely expensive as I’m not sure if the fact my current necks pull off if what prevents them being destroyed!

Some of the derby house rugs have buckles and are 1200 denier. I have 2, only one has a detachable neck. They are doing OK against my other horse who grabs rugs and hangs on. There's a sale on atm and are good value but many of the sizes are out of stock but may be available elsewhere. My horse is a young, lighter weight wb, they are a good fit for him.

Also, have you tried cleaning up the velcro on the rugs you have?

Yes the Velcro was good on all of them. We have watched him literally grab the straps and undo them over and over! He does it with his over reach boots and anything else he can reach ?‍♀️ it’s a good job he’s a lovely horse!
I’ll have a look at Derby House. I’ve not tried their turnouts. Thanks

They did actually have one that would have fitted the bill.
1200d 200fill and buckled neck but sold out in 6’3 both there and Rideaway! Typical

Rambo all in one turnout 200g has a permanent neck without a seam so it can’t come off, but it does have Velcro closures on the neck part.
He has a couple of Rambo’s. They just cost me so much I’m just a bit scared to try ? then another part of me thinks it’s more of a waste having them sat on a shelf ?‍♀️

COld nag, they do. Just don’t have the 1200d in stock in the right size.

I’ll have a look at Gallop, I’m not at all familiar with the brand. Thank you!

I've had 2 or 3 of these. They used to come with buckles at the neck but I don't think the new stock are made like that now. I haven't seen one with more than 600D and mine all ended up with major damage. They are good value and I was happy with mine until I got the rug destroying horse.

Why not just cover the bits the horse plays with a mix of capsicum and lemon? Just paint it on? Stop the behaviour rather than enabling it?

I haven’t tried that particular mix but have tried all sorts of mixes designed for cribbing or chewing. Spent all my summer spraying yuck stuff over fly sheets which got destroyed regularly. Luckily the rippers owner is a brilliant rug mender so she’s kept very busy!

Years ago, the neck fastenings on Shires and Weatherbeeta rugs came with a useful square flap that folded over the top of the fastenings to protect them from getting undone or dirty.
Brill idea, I think it was the Landa and Highlander combos that had them.
Unfortunately they seem to be scrimping on materials now. Was speaking with a rug wash and repair lady who said most of the repairs she does now is neck fastenings! I guess it keeps her in business though.
Having said that Ruggles do the protective flap on their neck rugs, so they're still out there.

ETA, I know you wanted velcro free, but thought this might be worth a try!
