I have a 70g detachable and a heavy weight detachable, but would like to spend some money I havn't got on a medium weight. Have been looking at the PE med weight combo, just wondered if it would rub less??
I found that the combo rugs rubbed my mares mane more than detatchable, they seemed to slide down her neck in a ruffle. Could be just the shape of my mare and how she moves which caused this. I much prefer detatchable kneck covers, they seem to fit my mares shape without rubbing.
I found that if I wanted my mare to have a full mane then I needed to use either a normal (no-neck) rug or a 'Wug' style. I've totally given up with full-necked rugs.
This is my current debate, too! Hugo's mane has only just grown back! Although I don't think his current girlfriend is helping with all the 'nibbling'! My friend has 3/4 neck rugs, that she swears by.
I think, as long as we don't get a repeat of last year, I will try leaving the neck off altogether this year.
I always go for the fixed necks. Don't like the detachable ones, as no matter how well made, they always seem to flip over/let water seep in.
I rug as little as posible, but will put a lightweight (with or without a neck depending on the temperature and how heavy the rain is) if it's raining and I want to ride later.
Detachable neck everytime. Not cos of mane rubbing but can be removed in milder weather and necks seem to get caught on fences more than just the actual rug part. On a combo, the whole rug is either trashed or has to go off to be repaired, but on a detachable, you can just send neck to be fixed or if its beyond that, you can buy just a neck and not a whole new rug.
I have found that combos fit better as they don't seem to pull back over the withers so much as normal neck and thus less rubbing or that 'ridge' that develops where the rug seems to be tight. I find the high neck sort better for the same reason. I know that the fit varies between makes and shape of horses but in my experience the detachable neck fastenings often break as well and they are slightly more fiddly to put on the horse as the neck part is often only available in a couple of sizes and can be quite big and baggy unless your horse is the perfect size.
I've always used combos on all my horses. some times they rub more than others. depends on the shape of the horse. My old girl always looses her mane in the winter. got a detachable one end of the winter so gonna try that this year.
