combo rugs :/

sorry guys another rug thread lol but i'm buying for my first horse and have been told you should always go for the next size up when buying combos, is this true? i've not heard any one else say this b4 and want to make sure i get the right size:confused:

I agree. I find weatherbeeta's very generous on their rug sizes and am always happy with the fit. Horseware Rambo's are true to size but the Amigos can come up slightly under.
 
Thank you tasteofchaos and tictac i've been looking at the weatherbeetas, like the look of the orican original. i will now be going rug shopping at the wkend without worrying, i can see myself spending a small fortune cause he's def gona need more than one :D;)
 
Before you spend the money, are you aware that combo rugs can stop the mane growing, and in some cases it falls out and never comes back?
 
i was told that combos rubbed less than the other full neck type of rug:confused: i got him a fal pro standard that fits nicely till moves then it slips back and pulls tight across his chest! lovely rug aswell. really hoping the weatherbeeta fits well, only one way to find out i guess:)
 
I've had an issue with any of my many different shaped and sized horses over the years. But I do adjust them twice a day, I do this weather it's a combo or not though
 
I bought a Weatherbeeta Orican a few years ago and it's still going strong! Fits my boy really well. I've always bought combo rugs in the same size as I usually do, and never personally had a problem with the mane being rubbed off, but I have heard of it happening with half neck ones.

This is not true, sorry. In some horses it is the heat/damp that appears to kill the hair root. I have seen horses in the hunting field where a perfectly good thick plait has simply fallen off the neck as the roots gave way when the rider tried to unplait it. There was no rubbing involved. A friend of mine now has a thin skinned warmblood mare with a mane that only grows from half way up the neck, due to a combo rug. Another friend of mine managed to kill her Highland's mane by using a lycra neck cover.

Some manes just cannot take being covered up all the time, nothing whatsoever to do with rubbing.
 
thanx for the advise every one and the words of warning cptrayes. he will only wear his combo in the coldest part of winter so hopefully as long as the rug fits well he should be fine :)
