Come on, those with joggers - please help!

thatsmygirl - what you have described is exactly what Kes does - identical. Everything you've said I can relate to. He'll even get to the point where he'll walk with his fronts, but jog with his hinds. Only when he's worked up, though.

He's worked about 3 times a week, mainly hacking as we've only a paddock to school in. He's got masses of energy, but isn't fit. I was unsure whether getting him fitter would make him better or worse?

Hanging cheek waterford. Put him into this when he first came because he was unstoppable in his jointed wilkie (although he did go nicely in it when not taking off!)

only a thought but is it worth trying a bitless bridle (if you can borrow one from somewhere) in case it is teeth/pain related - I used one (dr cook) for a few weeks - turning was my issue with it but tbf I tried it on a just backed youngster - stopping was brilliant - I had more control in that than in cheltenham gag ! I would try it in arena first as he may hate it though but it could be an easy way of ruling out mouth/teeth pain.

sorry no other words of wisdom as never had a jogger - mine is more a bulldozer

Yeah, this is something my trimmer and I have discussed and it's something I'm quite interested in anyhow, aside from the problems. My trimmer also says you can put one on with his normal bridle as an extra safety net at first. I definitely think this is worth trying - even if there is no pain in his mouth I think it might offer more control and reduce tension. I like the look of the Dr Cook, but it's not cheap if it doesn't work - as you say I should see if I can borrow one / find one second hand, just to try it first.

Head in the air jogger, usually, although he can jog with his head just about anywhere. His neck comes to short and thick it's almost a rectangle, if you know what I mean? I did take his martingale off - maybe a mistake?

Mine was exactly the same.....he hates poll pressure and couldnt stand a hanging cheek bit.....I have one of those padded comfort things on his bridle now which really helped. The jeffries eggbutt revolver snaffle really made a difference tho.

I did use a standing martingale for a while - I was in great danger of having my teeth knocked out his head used to get so high but luckily we don't need it now.

Oddly enough....he needs riding forward into the contact rather than leg off -he sounds exactly like mine used to be.....all I can say is, keep at it.....he will get there:D

That's interesting about the poll pressure... worth monitoring.

When he came he was in flash and martingale - I took both off. he doesn't like his mouth strapped shut and I didn't feel like the running martingale was really coming into play as he moves his head back and up. A standing could work better. At the moment he hasn't even got a noseband on as he headshakes with a nose band (I think this is because he is always moulting on his face and it gets itchy, perhaps?)

He is used to me riding with my leg on now, which is great. When he came leg on meant forwards - now he knows it's just there for security but that it can mean half halt or sideways - which he does, after a fashion. This is small progress. He used to jump when I put my leg on, but not anymore.

I do believe he will get there with patience and kindness. It's good to clock in with others now and then though to collect ideas and advice.

Thank you all :-)

Are you hacking out alone or in company, my old tb x used to jog if he wasn't at the front. If we hacked alone he never jogged.

Wish I had an answer but my TB just jogs at some point on any hack. It started pretty much with us moving to areas where hacking was on tracks rather than roads and plenty of open fields around... (we used to be in London in the early days and hacking was mostly on busy roads which didnt produce the jogging I get now). I usually just sit back, relax and let her get on with it, often I go with the flow and we just canter where possible, as this is what she seems to want... but not always possible and sometimes annoying wish I could change her but nothing seems to make her, she gets too excitable - with or without company, although tends to be a tad calmer when it's just us.
