Bee and my friend Sam were hacking yesterday. They were in single file wearing Hi Viz, on a lane about 100yds from the start of a 30 zone, heading toward it.
They heard a lorry coming from the 30 zone very fast round a blind bend, Comet in front froze, the lorry saw them and hit brakes, skidding down the road at them. Comet spun, lost his feet and went under Willough, all the time the lorry skidding closer.
Willough reared and bounced all over the place trying not to tread on Comet. The lane here is large enough for 2 vehicles to pass, but has steep high banks so nowhere to go..
Lorry eventually stopped and Comet regained his feet, Sam did not fall off. I think Comet only got his feet again as he is unshod behind so had more grip.
Driver is horrified, and apologetic saying he couldn't stop. Well if he had been travelling at 30 or just over he would have done easily.
More worrying is that he was taking up most of the road so if there had been a pack of cyclists or a car he would have hit it.
Lorry drove off, no other witnesses, girls did not get reg as lorry was dirty.
Comet has used one of his 9 lives, he is a bit sore and stiff today but only has a small scrape on his fetlock.
he is now terrified of all passing traffic though so looks like months of traffic training again. He was really good in traffic before too!
I shall give him a couple of bute a day to help him be more comfortable, but he will be ridden out just in walk tomorrow as I feel he needs to see traffic again asap. The road the other way from our house is a very quiet single track lane so he can go for a walk up there.
He is one very lucky pony!
I have reported it to the police and shall be talking to out community PC as soon as he comes back from holiday about speed trapping at that end of the village as there are alot of scrapes there at rush hour.
We only ride down there outside rush hour.
