coming to terms with the news

yes I completely agree. he has always been a very stoic horse so grins and bears a lot. the vet has given me enough bute and anti-biotics for 10 days. today he had a lovely roll and swelling reduced since yesterday, but I know that is only the external. going to chat to the vet again by the end of the week and prepare for the day, as i want to avoid a rapid and painful decline. the vet obviously cant give a clear answer on time, but fully agree with too soon not too late. the sudden appearance of very obvious external symptoms suggests it has been growing for a while and now putting a lot of pressure on his head. just still trying to process the shock really.

I am planning on saying goodbye next week, as my gut is telling me he has a few more days happiness left, now he has some pain relief in his system. but if there is any increase in swelling or he becomes more drowsy again like on Sunday I will try my best not to hesitate.

thank you everyone for your virtual hugs! I told the one person at my work who actually used to have horses and she gave me a lovely big hug. just about managed to hold it together!

Such a lucky horse to have you as a wonderful caring owner.

Sorry you have had to make such a horrid decision, but stick with your gut feeling, you know your horse best.

*Virtual Hugs*

So very sorry - he sounds a lovely boy and glad he's had at least a little temporary relief allowing you to see some of his spark back. 18 is still a good age and he's been very lucky to be in the same home for so long and clearly so well cared for. We lost our dog to a tumour (spleen) just before Christmas - we recognise now he'd had the odd Mike episode in the weeks running up to his scan but had recovered. We had him PTS the day of his scan as that episode had been more acute and we were told there was a risk the tumour could cause a major bleed. It was awful and a very difficult decision. Big hugs to you and him x
