Comments? (video)

Why? Just Why would you treat a beautiful intelligent animal that way? :(
Am I missing something? What were they actualy achieveing except proving all the misconseptions that Arabs are stupid, flighty and highly strung. :(
Is that realy how you show Arabs?

Is that a carrot stick and a waggly rope I see!!

I don't quite understand what they are trying to achieve, but whatever it is, they seem to be agreed about the best method to achieve it. How bizarre...

I was really hoping to see one of the horse strike out and take someones nose off!

No!

That video doesn't make for very pleasent viewing. I think what thease people are trying to achieve is to get the horse to be in a state of ' alertness' to try and show them off at their best. I wouldn't be surprised if those poor beautiful arabs become neurotic in a very short space of time.

Idiots, who don't seem to have the first clue how to handle horses.
I was hoping at least one of the horses would squash the dumb*** handler.
Poor horses :(
Kx

Horrible handling of fearful headshy horses, makes my blood boil. I did notce that one of the stewards seemed to be trying to intervene at one point by standing between the handler and his whip and the horse. Good on him, just a shame more didn't object to the awful handling.

That was not very pleasant to watch. They are such beautiful creatures too, really don't deserve that (not that any animal does).

And for the first guy in the video, Rule number one, when handling horses Do not wrap any rope attached to a horse around your hand. *idiot*

Anyone displaying such abusive and inept handling in the show ring should be instantly disqualified, imo. Horrible! :(

Btw, what's happening at 1:07??

I would love to be able to disqualify anyone who handled their horse that way. They seem to be aiming for the exact opposite to what the rest of us look to do when handling our horses. To see so many doing it is shocking. I did hear stories when I lived in the states of arabs being made addicted to cocaine, then having it withdrawn before the show. Handlers would then put a tiny amount inside their gloves so that when they went into the ring they would have that same neurotic, heightened alertness, to give them 'presence'.

Appalling, every shameful second of it! Some of the showing world in USA is obscene and so very, very cruel. Humans showing how much in tune they are with animals. NOT
I bet they all claim to love their horses and give them the best feed and care!

I don't know what's happening at 1.07 but that judge is in a very dangerous position.

Doh, Just noticed this is in Aachan not USA. Assumptions eh!

Nope I can't understand it either, there's alertness and then there's head shy, I can only see the latter, can't imagine why anyone can see any beauty in that.

I'm appalled....what the hell is that all about. What mankind will do for a 'win'......this sort of 'handling' should be banned immediately.

I am lost for words.
I attended an open day at an Arab stud in the UK and had to leave because I felt uncomfortable with the showing methods and attitude, but that pales into insignificance compared to this video clip.

Aside from it being unspeakably cruel, I'm just not sure I understand what's going on? I *think* they are trying to get that alert/far away look pose so coveted by Arab show judges (I hate it) . . . and that's why they are holding that whip up to get the horses to look at the dangly thing on the end (much like you you might try to get a kitten to look at the feather) . . . but why, every single time the horse touches his nose to the end of the whip does he recall like he's been shocked? It's quite bizarre.

Also, it just looks the handlers are there to intentionally wind these horses up . . . just makes me deeply uncomfortable to see. Most (or possibly all) of these horses will end up at worst headshy and even just downright neurotic . . . not to mention the damage all that yanking and stargazing must be doing to the horse's neck muscles . . .

. . . it makes me very, very sad.

P

i can't understand what they're trying to achieve?
alert and full of presence and head-shy and flighty are two completely different things.
some of the handlers were presenting the whip to the horse, then as the horse was beginning to accept it and investigate it, they would pull the whip away quickly and proceed to attempt to whip them, what does this achieve?!?! A neurotic and highly strung pony who is fearful of whips for the rest of his life.
this is disgraceful and in public too?! agree with some of the others, what's going on behind the scenes...

I have been the humble slave of an Arab for the last 20 years. I have never shown a horse but my time on an Arabian forum taught me a couple of things.

They are trying to capture the 'stargazing pose'
(not my horse)

They use the whip as a point for the horse to look at, or touch nose with. The heavy handedness is also to make the horse look 'alive'.

There will also be a bunch of spectators banging, shouting and making as much noise as possible to try and spook the horse when it goes past in order to make it look excited.

It makes the horses very aggitiated and frightened and puts everyone in the showring in danger. But it is an accepted part of the 'performance'.

IMO it makes what is a wonderful, people friendly, war horse, breed look like scatty aliens

I find it really disturbing that someone would deliberatly give their animals any of those types of drugs. Do they not do drug tests on show horses too?

Oberon, I have an arab and his breeder is always trying to make me show him and send her photos. I never do because he is always grazing or doing something calm and sweet and unphotogenic. And I always think is my horse just too laid back for photography and how is this when he is actually a very highly strung horse. Now I understand. Is this what happens in England also at inhand shows?

terrible and to see one guy wrap that lead rope around his hand a few times to make sure he has a good grip makes me feel sick its pure abuse its not fair it gives people within the arab world a bad name because of these nutters if they do that in full view what do they do behind closed doors poor horses shanking i think they call it its ABUSE

Its very interesting isn't it,when compared to the 'traveller' cruelty on a current thread.
As I and many others have said on that thread, you get scum in all sectors of the horse world.

The traveller's are not bashing the horses around they head. These idiots are!!
