In addition to all the diseases/infections mentioned in the article is Brucella Canis, which is shed in saliva and can survive in water. Shared water bowls are a source of infection.

I've never thought that water bowls in vets waiting rooms was a good idea.

At the vet hospital Jessie was in they had water bowls dotted about everywhere.

In the huge waiting room, one either end and one by the central doors. Outside the doors one either side of the entrance and some dotted around the grass exercise area. At first I would not let Jessie drink from them but then decided I was being ridiculously fussy and it must be OK if the vet's hospital thought it a good idea. They are supposed to be 'the' small animal vets hospital in Ireland after all. 🤷‍♀️

My local dog vet doesn't have any in the waiting room. I have to say I am still conflicted about how safe a shared bowl is in areas that your dogs are very likely to come into contact with other poorly dogs.

Pubs are the worst. My local has a big water butt so you can easily fill your own bowl rather than dog drinking out of theirs.

That makes sense. Facility provides water but take your own bowl.

A dog field I used to go to did the same thing due to the risk of transmission of kennel cough. Water provided but take your own bowl.

This is when raw fed dogs are useful, they drink so little! I have a bottle of water and small collapsable bowl in the car in case we ever need water although mine prefer a filthy puddle and contaminated canal than tap water.

We always provide water at work, small countryside cafe. Two large bowls that I meticulously scrub out each day, and rinse and refill as necessary. So many people just don't bring their own water.

They give me the ick.

We have one at the dog club but after a few stories about dogs getting ill elsewhere I've finally told them all to buy their own bowls and keep a big bottle in the car too, if anything, in case they break down.
It's also good practice for travelling to carry your own water, or buy bottled, lots of dogs get the runs from drinking 'out of town' tap water.

We have collapsible water bowls for the dogs when out and about. They fit in my dog bag easily. They are only small, but can refill as much as we have enough water for. Always have a large bottle that OH carries.

Our vet have a sign saying please ask if your dog wants/needs a drink.

Our small animal vets will provide a clean bowl of water on request, but it is not left out for communal use.

I lump dog owners who have those wretched ball throwing thingeys into the same category as those who let their dogs drink from communal water bowls, ie ‘numpties’.

Judgemental, me 🤔🤣?

Was it CorvusCorax on here who recommended these? Brilliant things, fill it up, sling it over your shoulder and you’re away. The JRT happily drinks from the screw top lid.

I’ve got a water carrying belt which also has pockets for my phone and poo bags, I seem to be in the minority where I am but I would rather they didn’t drink out of stagnant puddles or ponds. I let them drink in the river on the days I do that walk

My dog will not touch communal bowls, but happily slurps up filthy water from puddles. I don’t even bother putting a water bowl down at home any more as she prefers the bird bath, the pond and any full watering cans.
