Finally had my first comp last wednesday after not doing the first B team comp at imperial (long story lol!) The comp was in kent so had to get up at 5 to be able to get there in time from Essex, the drive seemed to take forever and we arrived 45 minutes late (oops!). We choose the order and horses for the dressage, our team was last in the team order, and i was last on the horse i rode which was good as i had a chance to watch it be ridden by the others. I drew a lovely grey called silver, apparently 16.1 but looked smaller to me, very nice looking horse when we watched the riders warming them up :). The others were pretty miffed with their draws, G choose number 13 and had bad lucked in both dressage and showjumping with her draws. Not being much of a cob fan draw cobs for both . S also didn't want the other cob and C, who prefers cobs, got the snazzy chestnut 'dressagey' horse, lol!
So G was first up, and did a nice test despite her horse being fairly strong. C was next, and did a good test although didn't quite get to grips with riding him in as good an outline as the others riding him. S did a good test (doubt she would ever do a bad one!)
Then finally it was me. I wasn't nearly so nervous as i though it would be! I got on and immediatly could tell this was a lovely horse to ride! Lovely paces, and the kind you don't have to kick every stride to keep them going (still getting used to not riding 'typical' riding school types) The warm up was good, well at least it felt that way, but looking at the pictures he wasn't nearly forwards enough (even though he felt like he was!) He had a lovely soft mouth and actually went into an outline for me (only just getting the hang of doing this properly :p) The canter wasn't so great in the warm up but better in the test. He had an odd canter to trot transition where he would stick one leg out going into the trot and do a sort of very extended trot with just the one leg, but apart from that felt lovely.
For anyone who doesn't know this was in fact my first ever dressage test (in a competition). I was very surprisingly calm going in, and didn't forget what i was doing thankfully! Only a couple of obvious mistakes, fell out of canter in the canter-trot-canter half circles (think he had learnt the test by then lol!) and two breaks of cancer in the 20 meter circle, and didn't stop exactly at G at the end of the test. All my fault of course  but you gotta make some mistakes i guess. Overall commets mainly said things like 'needs to be more forwards' and 'not in front of the leg' totally my fault and thinking about it now i barely used any leg at all so shall be improving on that next time. Got 138 out of 240 which i think was about 57% (don't use precentages in these comps) so pretty chuffed, and even got 3 7's :D Despite being placed near the bottem of the table i was very happy, considering i've never owned/loaned/shared a horse before asnd only ever ridden one a week or less and everyone else has horses and compete, many of them affiliated level :).

Next was the jumping, i drew Billy, a little 15h bay gelding, who looked quite similar to the little horse i jump at a riding school at home. Watched them all being warmed up. I was first on my horse this time. The RI at the yard came and told us that he thought we ought to know roughly what they are like to jump, so he said 'well they all jump', at which point we thinking well i hope so as there wouldn't be much point in doing a comp if they idn't, lol!
Warmed Billy up, wasn't a good warm up, he was extremely dead to the leg, refused to stay on the outsdie track and kept napping towards other horses and the gate! However he jumped the practice jumps fine, and as soon as we started the round he was fine :) Managed a clear :D although it felt hideously unstylish, but the scorings were better than i thought! Scored 64 out of 120, with a couple of 7's thrown in, and was surpised with a 6 for 'position and seat of the rider' as i though i must have looked aweful! Comments said 'keep your lower leg on to help you on a turn', 'look up earlier from the jump' and 'knee very high so lower leg loose' so definatly needs some work (although i knew this already :p) but not as bad as it could have been. Also i didn't come last on Billy (woooop!)
S had the snazzy looking grey irish mare, but unfortunatly had a pole down which she was very annoyed about (shes very competetive and didn't have much luck in the last comp jumping). G got one of the little cobs (much to her annoyance ) but got a good clear and C had the other cob so she was happy and also went clear :D
Overall we came tired (out of 4 teams) no not great but we beat imperial so were happy with that :) and scores were close, Brunel won with kent second. G came 8th and S came 3rd so that was pretty awesome, if S carries on she could possibly get to nationals :p

Well done for getting this far! and now for the fun part with the pics :p i took 800 all together! CC welcome, i know i have loads to work on :o

Sounds good! At least you have a few things to improve on for the next competition. The draw can be a pain but by the sounds of things you were lucky!

yup i think i probably got the best two horses for it!

Unfortunatly our next comp is next wednesday and i can't train tuesday as i have lectures all day so that one could be interesting! But then we have 4 weeks to train for our home comp so hopefully will improve a bit more by then :)

I used to be on the Kent Uni A team and this has bought memories flooding back. Fab times...made it nationals one year. The little cobs they had there may not have looked much, but some of them could fly (this comes from someone that is a confirmed tb and warmblood fan).

Sounds like you did well, good luck for the next one. Brunel often had very nice horses...are they still doing it at Snowball Farm? x

Yeh they were certainly great little jumping horses! I'm not a huge cob fan but they had some sweet little ones :)

No brunel have theirs at littlebourne farm now. Don't know what they're like but they certainly look nice from their website! Hope theirs no nutters :D

Wow, well done!! Turning up and riding two horses you don't even know in a competition is such an achievement!! The grey looks lovely, but as you say, perhaps a bit big for you (more bulky than tall) which doesn't help things; the bay looks like a lot of fun!

Thanks :)

Yeh it is quite strange just getting on a strange horse, but i guess i'm getting used to it now. Hopefully brunel won't have too many huge ones as i'm only 5'4

Yeh as far as i know both of our teams are going so i shall probably meet her :)

hey well done...i used to ride for my team at uni (Oxford) and it can be really nervewracking riding strange horses. they must have changed it a bit since i did it- they used to let you choose your horse rather than doing an actual draw and the jumping didn't have style marks (fortunately for me :p)

the first comp i did was in london somewhere and i got bucked off in the working in and then twice when i was in the ring! haha :D

yeh wish there wern't style marks, lol, would rather have a jump off!

Lol you must have been given a bit of a nutter, hope i don't get one this week! Although i'm more scared of our home comp. Our A team had theirs last wednesday and said it was a bit of a disaster as all the horses they chose we difficult or crazy or wouldn't jump lol! Doesn't seem like we have any to choose from for ours!

where we used to have our home comps they used to let us go up early in the morning and train on our horses that we were going to have on the day. was brilliant as always won our home comps :D

lol trying to be positive as much as poss :p

We train in ipswich at Newton Hall equestrian centre, which is like an hours drive from us.

Ah wish we could train that morning! i think ours will start at some ridiculous time though, but hopefully we may train the day before or somthing as apparently kent did this last week and they did really well. :)

Ahh sorry I know this is an old thread but I'm trying out for the Essex team on the 23rd! Do you still ride for them? Have you got any tips for the try out?

Oh right is that for the A team? Yeh i'm on the B team again this year although i didn't actually try out (as i'm on placement year so didn't think i'd have time for it), they were short of people so i said i would ride again. What kind of experience do you have?

I'll probably be trying out for the B team as well :) I've been riding most of my life, but haven't competed that much recently due to severe lameness problems with my old horse, however that should all be changing now with my new part loan :D

Thistle - indeed they are :p I must have met your daughter last year at derby day! They have lovely facilities at their yard thats for sure!

pugsand ponies - I'm sure you'll be fine then! I didn't even know we were doing more tryouts! I'm sure our A team is more or less one member short however (there was a girl who was going to ride but hasn't yet been to training so assuming shes not going to do it!) We had a lot of trouble finding people as i think the last tryouts were a bit messed up with dates etc and so they have a couple of people in the B team who are inexperienced with dressage and jumping. I had never done a dressage test before i joined last year so i'm sure you will be absolutely fine :p The horses have all been fine so far. We have 'A' team and 'B' team horses so you'll probably get one of the 'B' team ones in tryouts as they are a bit more 'riding school'. Not sure how they're doing it but they might just get you to ride with everyone in the teams as i assume it will be in the evening when our training is, so i will probably see you there :D
Our next competition is kent in February, then our home comp and then imperial, and of course derby day which is at home this year :)

Ahh, I used to compete quite a bit (only unaffiliated) but I've had a break recently, and only just started riding my new share, so I'm a bit nervous as I feel out of practice! Is the general standard of riding quite high?

Well, Essex and UEA also have Writtle (who ride full time) and Cambs,( who have a fair number of u21 GB team riders and those knocking on the door) in their league. So those two have a fairly high standard.

I know the UEA squad have some PC B test holders and people who have done some lower level aff SJ and dressage, a member who has evented at Nov and competes BD Elem. It's more about your ability to get on and ride a horse you have never sat on before than a test of how well you can ride a particular horse.

Holzrolz, my daughter jumped a little cob called Timmy at Derby Day. I think she got a pretty good score :)

pugsandponies - As Thistle says, its all about how you can get on any horse and get a good tune out of it. Many riders are very good, but struggle if they get a certain type of horse if they arn't used to riding a horse like that. My instructor at home (who trains plymouth uni team) gave me an example when i riding a new horse there that used in comps, quite an easy little horse to ride, but she said one girl in one of the competitions couldn't even get him to canter as she was trying to force his head into an outline and he wouldn't work like that. Unfortunetly you only have about 10 minutes to work out how to ride the horse though :p

It sounds like the standard of the A teams is pretty high, but i would say the standard on the B teams is generally a bit lower this year. Our A team has a girl who used to event, not sure what level but probably about novice. The team captain used to do some affiliate jumping. Neither of them give a damn what horse they get either and seem to have no fear! the other girl i think may have done some affiliated although not sure but shes good also.
On our B team however no one really competes :o One girl used to do lower level stuff with her horse i think although i have no idea how often etc, but she can ride new horses well. The rest of us have all come from a riding school background, although one has their own horse now.

Its good that you've found a share though as then you can practise the dressage test and stuff :) i recently aquired a share horse for the first time and it was definatly useful practising the dressage test the night before the competition :p
Don't worry about not having done much recently either. Our team captain hadn't ridden for two years before joining. For our first comp in december last year we jumping in training on the monday and that was the first time i had jumped since about April, and my jumping (especially position) has gone waaay down hill. Lots of people on other teams don't usually jump either (if they prefer dressage), and some people get really nervous jumping.

Re: your other thread we don't train at brooke farm but rayne which is in braintree. Definatly a good idea to book a lesson, the instructors are lovely there. I might just join you, i need the jumping practice!

Thistle - Is your daughter on the A team or B team? I think i had a horse called Mr Pickles...or something like that  very interesting ride that was, i had no brakes whatsoever and almost jumped one of the jump wings as i'd forgotten my glasses and that arena is soo huge i couldn't read the jump numbers :o
