Comp report (with pics)- I am such a numpty!

Pop your stirrups up a couple of holes, you should find your lower leg is a bit more secure then. Otherwise position is fine :)

oh give her a break!! she is completely aware of her horses condition and is doing something about it. This thread was not asking for peoples opinions on whether or not she should have taken him jumping or not, he is def a work in progress which is being over seen by Pony Club and various other professional trainers. I say good luck and i hope that you and Andy have a great year, take no notice of some of these posts :)

if she is aware of her horses condition then she wouldn't be jumping it. It has serious muscle wastage and she is asking for trouble down the line healthwise. I have an exracer and when he was in similar condition all i was doing was limited riding over poles to improve his topline. I would not have dreamed of taking him over a course of fences. Not only for the impact of the jumping, but also for the stresses of turning and collection. I think it is really unfair to ride a hollowbacked with such poor condition around a course. My lad has way more condition and i still am only doing light jumping.he is mad keen to do it, but i need to build up his muscles first.

I think if you post up pics you have to accept what people say. I always like the posters threads so i am not saying this out of badness. She seems like a lovely person who is mad about her horse, so i am really surprised to see she would do this, and i can't imagine a professional trainers saying its a good idea. As another poster said, it looks like a gorgeous genuine horse, and it would be a shame to overface it, especially in that poor condition.

I think if a new poster had posted these pics they would have been ripped to shreads.

Didn't think of that, I'll give it a try thank you :)

Thank you :D

wow there are some delightful people on here! looks like you had a good day, dont worry bout the wrong fence, we all do it. Well done!

Thank you :)

I personally think he's very poor and wouldnt be out jumping him at all - BUT! What a LUSH horse! My goodness he's gonna be a real stunner when he's got some muscle on him (and thats mostly what it is, it isn't weight, its muscle he needs really). Really yummy. He looks like he's got a decent pop on him as well. He's fab! You must be really pleased.

P.S. ....is the noseband staying......?! *runs away*

Thank you, I am chuffed with him I think he is fab :)
Nope its a temp measure, only use it jumping and hacking aswell.

My first thought was he looks thin. get him fed up and those back muscles built up - uphill hacking in walk would do him good hun

What a lovely genuine horse Andy looks. Im sure you will have a brilliant time together this summer.
As for his condition, sorry not seen your previous thread. I bought a very underweight TB and no amount of haylage or hard feed put condition on her, I was so worried but we moved to a yard with fantastic grazing and she then slowly put the weight on and looked great.
Good luck with him, hes lovely :)

Our weekly routine involves walking up a very steep hill and he is already looking better from it :)

Thank you, we are hoping to move yards in the month or so hopefully he will do better then. I'm hoping the new feed will also pick him up soon, but he has been putting weight on since we got him :)

fab - looking forward to seeing his pics in a couple of months to see the difference in him - got a good pop on him too and you look just right on him - its just his back end I noticed the most

I know what you mean about unaffliated SJ- I can't face it.
I'm taking my boy SJ schooling at Yorkley Friday to see if he's ready to BS then I can go to Summerhouse on a Tuesday- much less harumscarum!

What a lovely boy :D looks like you had great fun but I do have to confess that when I looked at your first picture I drew breath as he looks so skinny and under muscled. You have not had him long though have you and from what I rememer of seeing your other horses that is not the normal condition of one of your horses. He will get there with the love and extra feed you are giving him. By the summer he should be up to condition and ready to do you proud :D Good luck xx

Has Yorkley re-opened? I rememebr it closing down a few years ago and I loved it there and now can't find anything on it!

BS at Summerhouse is lovely, best of luck :)

Tricksy- thank you, had him about a month now so building him up. Give him a few months and he will look fab, I guess its just one of those things that happen when you buy in the winter.

He certinaly looks genuine, and I have read through the comments people have put, you obviousley care for him, but think about it logically, the pressure your putting on his muscles and joints when you land. Although pictures can be decieving, its clear he is not ready for jumping work at this level, perhaps do something smaller until youve built him up a bit, all that extra feed your giving him and everything else, is just being instantly worn off from the things your asking him to do, therefore hes not getting any condition from it whatsoever.

Good luc in whatever you choose to do, but push him too far and you wont be able to turn back time and change any lasting damage.

Andy looks so genuine- he needs a lot more meat on his bones but a reckon Dr Green and lots more feed (like you said you were planning on your previous thread) will sort him out a treat.

For all those haters- yes, I agree, he looks very poor. HOWEVER, I had a TB who looked like that when I first got him... Shock, horror, he went XC looking like that. By the start of the summer he was sleek and looked well. But that little excursion did him no harm and gave me the world of confidence. (we know it did no harm as shortly after we had the vet and the back man out for a different reason and they said he was very well)

oh everyone please stop being so harsh. She's obviously taken on board what people have said if you bother to read her comments, so stop being rude its unnecessary, she has only just got him as well and putting weight on an already skinny horse (particularly Tb) this time of year is always an uphill struggle.

What I see is a genuinely nice horse who is enjoying himself - its not as though she did many rounds and is jumping him every single day is it?

I think you've got yourself a good'un there! :D x

I do agree that shes taken on board the comments, sorry if mypost sounded so harsh, its just horrible to think you have such a bond then you end up with some lasting damage. I have just got an ex-racehorse and hes in great condition but wouldnt do any serious jumping with him.

I guess its each to their own, you know him better than we do, so hopefully it works out for you!

Kokopelli- Only open to hire with or without a course of jumps. And ONLY £25 for an hour- which is very cheap when you think Summerhouse charge £20 for 15 minutes on a Wednesday!

And your 4th hour is free (once 3 have been paid for) http://www.forestofdeanequestrian.co.uk/equestrian/amenities.htm

And you can alway go for a nice hack in the woods after too.

Good luck and I'm sure I'll be seeing you at local BS comps in the summer x

I too though 'oh my' when I saw the pictures.

I'll tell you an anecdotal tale though :).

My mate got an ex racer in about September, when he'd been on the summer grass, he looked fine. The first winter, he looked bloody awful and when he took his rugs off for me to ride, I was shocked . Anyway, all they did was to give him a lunchtime feed and he did look a bit better.
The next winter, knowing he didn't winter well, he got 3 feeds as soon as he came in off the summer grazing. Different horse, he looked great and has never looked as bad as he did that first winter.

Andy is so different from Koko, it's bound to be a learning curve, especially in winter. We all know how TB's can be .

Personally, I'd lay off the jumping until he has built up his muscles.
I would look for your other thread to post this on but I'm too lazy sorry :o.

Well done bet you were over the moon, and you wont jump the wrong jump again now youve done it!!hehe;)

As for his condition yes hes a bit weedy you know that and are working on that, my advice, tidy up his clip its not the most flatering and think its making him look more downhill than he actually is. As for feeding havnt read the other thread so dont know what your feeding him, alfa a oil is brillient for weight gain, spread over 3 feeds and it will help with weight and gove his coat a nice shine, and lunge him long and low either a perssoa, or put the side reins either low or between his legs will help strenghen his back and bottem. He doesnt look that bad hes a teenager that was living out till a few months ago its the end of the winter and hes a TB he could look worse!!! And he might have a slight dip in his back from his age now!! But honestly cant talk high enough of Alfa a oil it did wonders for a ISH i had and his coat looked so shiney like glass!!! But get your clippers on him it will really help.:)

Thanks for the helpful comments. I will lay off the jumping for a while until he looks better.

nikCscott- Thank you for that, might have to go there sometime I used to love competing there :)

zoelouisem- My insturctor is sorting out his clip on wednesday :) I'm awful at clipping but I have to learn its only my second time doing it

You'll always get some who like to see fat horses so I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm not a fan of fat horses but I'm not a fan of very skinny, undermuscled horses either - there is such a thing is being too much the other way.

He does look keen but I'd be reluctant to jump a horse that height in such poor condition - I don't know the horses history so I'm assuming he's just looking a bit poor coming out of winter and once he muscles up and fattens up a bit (yes they do need a little bit of fat IMO) then he'll be fab!

Ah you most of picked the worst clip to practise with, im a dab hand at clipping and get paid to do it, but my blankets are rubbish there the hardest to do espeacially on a bony Tb;) Even when i did my round welshie it was rubbish and clipped it off then end. But hell look better once its tided up.:)

Tbh I can't clip even in straight lines :p I need all the help I can get but I'm thinking of getting a hunter done on wednesday of course my RI will be doing the lines :)

Use a bit of bailing twine and chalk that's how I got my lines straight and the same level on both sides :) but I agree he will look better when he is clipped as the fluff does him no favors

I wouldn't hunter clip a horse that needs to gain weight. Yes its the easiest clip to do, but would not help him out at all... I do agree that the current clip doesn't help the overall picture.

Haven't commented so far but I wouldn't be clipping anymore fur off him as he is so underweight. Surely it's just vanity that makes you want to make him look better? Keep his coat on, change his feed (I found baileys#4, alfa a, pink powder and veg oil worked for my very skinny TB) and alter his workload. As soon as the grass comes through that will help massively.

Good luck!

Might keep him how he is and just get my lines straightened up. I know it isn't flattering for him but I would rather he is warm then looking good :)

leg_end- I just changed feeds a week ago so I'm not going to change again until he settles on this one, I don't want to un-settle is stomach, thank you for your advice though :)
