Hello everybody, merry Christmas! This is my first post, although I've been a long time reader of the forum, and have been hugely helped and influenced by a lot of the posts on here since setting up our new yard last summer. We are based in Essex, and currently have three liveries - shortly to be four, on our yard, and have loved every minute of it, even the sea of mud that our paddocks have now become! We intend to expand in spring and will need to buy a second hand compact tractor to move the muck heap, etc. do you have any recomendations on make, model, etc, or which to avoid? Thank you very much

Kubotas if you only need small equipment, they are easily available and so are the attachments. Or if you need something bigger, then a classic but not vintage tractor eg 1970s/1980s wee thing - 50-75hp. We have a 1976 John Deere 75hp 2030 and it is lovely!

Thank you. We have a John deere mower, so really rate these! We've also been looking at yanmar mini tractors as well. The last time I drove a tractor was 1979, so things have moved on a bit since then!

Youd be quite at home with ours then! However we do have 40 acres to cope with so perhaps the Yanmar type (Kubota or Iseki would prob hold value better tho) would be good for the things you need it to do.

One thing about the non mini classic tractors such as the JD - it is much cheaper/easier to get them repaired (at least I find it so) without being fleeced by a dealer, as there are a lot of 'old boys' around who love them and remember using them, and are only too pleased to earn some money coming and mending/servicing them! win win!

I have a stockman tractor, and it does all I need. I have 20 acres and 8 horses.

I would lovely to have a front loader, but manage with a rear spike. Only thing I can't do is shift the muck heap. I get a friendly neighbour to do that for me.

Thank you both for your replies. At the moment our muck heap is behind the stables and pretty small, the horses are out more or less 24/7 with just odd nights in their stables, so the amount of stable muck is quite small. However, once we expand in spring, we plan to get a trailer for the muck and drive it to another part of the land every other day. Thus this willbe the main use for the tractor, I envisage.

If you got one powerful enough to cope with a front loader (more the classic than the mini ones you were looking at) then you could get people to empty wheelbarrows straight into the bucket and then take it off and empty it.

If mini tractor, make sure the trailer has a good high tipping mechanism and think about how people will get the muck onto the trailer (health and safety etc). Muck is very heavy to lift up and fork off.

Are we allowed to recommend? Try Leppard Engineering, Markbeech, Edenbridge ask for Peter - good range of Kubotas and compacts new and s/hand.
