So...have been considering the possibility of holding a Fun/Companion dog show, with all proceeds going to to Dogs Trust.

Apparently the done thing is to have a Kennel Club Companion dog show license from the Kennel club (Comes with Public Liability Insurance). However, the seem to have rather restrictive terms, such as-

Apparently you must have a schedule which follows:
PEDIGREE CLASSES

(See Kennel Club Show Regulations F (3) paragraph 4)
2. NOVELTY CLASSES
(No individual Breed Classes e.g. Border Collies, Lurchers etc. or classes for a particular group e.g. Working Terriers may be
scheduled).
THE FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES ONLY:
Dog with the Waggiest Tail Prettiest Bitch
Dog Judge would like to take home Best Child Handler
Most Handsome Dog Best Crossbred Mongrel
3. COMPANION DOG CLUB NOVELTY CLASSES
(As (2) above – however, the classes are limited to those dogs that are Members of the Kennel Club Companion Dog Club).
4. OBEDIENCE CLASSES
(Title/test must differ from those laid down in Kennel Club Obedience Regulations).

Is it possible to work your way around it, or to go without a KC lisence.

If anyone has anything to share on the matter of Companion dog shows, please let me Know :)

you can run a fun dog show without following the KC rules, you need to sort your own insurance though. no restrictions if you do it without the KC though so thats what we are steering to next time we do one. the KC wants the name and address of every exhibeter and dog in each class which means most of the time it seems easier to make people pre-book each entry but in reality you get far more entries if they just pay a pound as they enter the ring.
if you do breed classes you need to do it under KC rules as people will expect a breed judge and most wont do it unless its KC-we never have anywhere near as many entries in breed classes though so i am always trying to drop the breed ring-have not managed yet

class 4 never gets many entries and again you need an experienced judge-we have never bothered with it as the other show organisers we speak to advise against it

Have run many KC Exemption (licenced) dog shows for charities, have never supplied names and addresses to KC, is this something new??
Classes usually as follows unless the charity/organisation want some extras (and whether you are in town or country)
Pedigree
1/ Any variety puppy, 6 to 12 months old
2/ Any variety Sporting Breed
3/ Any variety Non Sporting Breed
4/ Any variety Open

Best Pedigree - 1st prize winners from the above classes

Family Dogs
5/ Any variety puppy 6 to 12 months (open to pedigree and crossbreed puppies)
6/ Best crossbreed
7/ Best veteran ( over 7 years)
8/ Prettiest bitch
9/ Hansomest dog
10/ Best child handler
11/ Dog most like it's owner
12/ Dog judge would most like to take home

Best family dog - 1st prize winners from classes 5 - 12

Other popular classes are
fastest bonio eater
best trick
fancy dress
best lurcher
best herding dog
best ratter type

If you can get the lure - terrier and lurcher racing, but do insist racers are muzzled or the slowest terrier usually wins whilst the others are fighting lol!!
Good luck and have fun :-)

Ok, thankyou :)

What lisences can get, apart from Kennel Club ones, if you need one at all? Could you have say an open pedigree class (Or working and non-Working) With Just a respected judge, or does it have to be a KC one?

(I may steer clear of racing, sounds scary!)

it something that you have been required to collect in at least the last 3yrs we have never done it thoroughly as it too much work but it is now required that you collect names etc.

we tend to steer clear of 'type' classes and go for

fastest sausage eater

best trick

fancy dress

best 6 legs

best pair (same and opposite separate classes)

best rescue

and the standard best condition/ puppy/ veteran etc

Our hunt hold one every year it's hilarious , lots of silly classes, dog racing ( not serious ) followed by a hog roast it's a great evening out we got rained off this year though.

So yeah, what else would I need?
Thought of:

Rosettes
Trophy(s)
megaphone { ;) }
Insurance
Fencing for ring (Rope?)
Signs ("To the Show" Type things :) )
Competitor numbers (Just to be pinned on to jumpers)
Maybe a table selling refreshments?
Judge ;)
Notices (To put up in local shops:) )

What else?

Would I need any tents?

thanks :D

Thanks, thats very helful :) Did you get permission from a landowner to hold it, and where was it (indoor arena, field, ect.??) Did you have to pay to hire the venue?
And does the Kennel club not mind if you cut some of the classes?
And how did you get a Judge, do they have to be qualified?

Thanks, I am clueless :p

We were donated the land to use for the show, it was just an outdoor field though, but didnt hold us back :)

As long as you provide pedigree classes and novelty classes the KC dont really mind what you hold. You can change the classes to suit you.

I got a qualified judge for the Pedigree classes (I compete at Crufts so know plenty!!) but you could contact your local dog training clubs to see if they know anyone.
For the novelty judge I just asked someone who I thought would be good (first was my mum, then a good friend, then chairman of the local riding club) As long as they like dogs and are good with people too I am happy with that.

If you need any help just PM me as having organised 3 shows within the last 18 months (all by myself!) I have ironed out a few of the issues you may not have thought of. :D

Yes please get a proper judge for the pedigree classes, the worst show I ever went to had a vet judging the pedigree dogs - he had to ask several what breed they were and judged them all sitting in a circle in the ring, apparently deciding on the winners by patting them on the head and checking a few teeth.

The schedule Paint put up is a good example, I too would ditch the companion dog club class, very few ever enter it!

There are dog food companies that provide ring numbers and samples of their food as prizes, either free or very cheaply - Fish4Dogs are probably the best of the bunch, Cobbydog do it as well but their food is rubbish. :o

Rope fencing for ring(s) is fine, please make the rings as big as possible, small rings are another pet hate. The only things I can see missing off your list are bins (a couple of black bin liners tied to the stakes of the ring are fine, with signs reminding people to poo pick).

Good luck :)
