Hi,
Right the situation is:
My step mum has a gorgeous mare who is absolutely fantastic, with one problem.... she wont stay out on her own!!
At the mo the horse I have is sharing a field with her so all is fine.But.... i'm trying to loan him out to someone. Ideally to someone who will keep him at our yard in Bucks, but if the right person does come along and wants to move him, we need to find someone maybe with a companion horse that wants to move yards? It also needs to be a gelding as she goes mental when other mares are around!!
This problem has been going on for months, my stepmum just says that she's settling in but who knows!!
We've tried turning her out on her own for a bit but she just paces(which isnt good for the fields at the min)and has been known to hurt herself(which is obviously most important!).also if she sees any others going in she goes mad as she thinks she's being left out on her own!! HELP!!!
Thanks!!

My ex-racer tb is the EXACT same - i put it down to settling in but two years on and he is still the same no matter what i've tried. He'll hack alone, go to shows alone go out in the field alone as long as he can see another horse but the minute he senses he might be totally alone there is major carry on! Are you at livery - is buying a little companion out of the question?

Yes she's the same!!she'll hack out alone and goes to shows and loads alone too!!
If she see's others in nearby field she's fine too!
Well I think buying a companion would be the last option really as my step mum doesn't really have the time to look after another one!
We've got a yard with liveries and we've tried to tie in with the other liveries, but its so hard as they turn out at different times and bring in at different times, then if they ride she's on her own again!!
Its driving us all crazy!!
Its really interesting that yours is exactly the same tho!

My 2 yr old used to be like that. Unfortunately, other than moving yards she doesn't now have a choice - she has 6 acres all to herself and some horses over the edge to "talk" to but she is pretty much on her own.

She was mannic at first, charged around to the point of repeately ending upon her back! And dropped a little condition and was highly stressed for a few weeks. BUT she has now settled completely and is as happy as larry with or without another horse

although occasionally she'll get a little excited and run over to the hedge to see who is trotting up/down the road.

Honestly, love him but drives me bonkers some times! My old boy was on box rest over crimbo, was to take him out for very small walks so Risky (my TB) was in field, pottering in and out whilst Ali on rest, I decided to take Ali the 5 yards from stable to road outside for his little walk - where Risk could se him from the gate and he had a flaky jumped the paddock fence galloped up the field - realised we were still only at the road and came trotting back in! Aaaarggghh!

Can you not come to some arrangement with another livery that shes brought in if she's going to be last out alone?

Yep we have tried that and the liveries aren't exactly the most helpful!!
We've gotta do some serious thinking tho as its getting ridiculous!!
p.s she has also jumped out of a field to get to another horse onto concrete!!

Rather than buying a companion, how about fostering one from a sanctuary? Obviously it would still involve the same amount of care, but would be giving a needy horse a good home, and security.

You could rehome a veteran? There are ones out there who are still o.k, even hackable, that would keep her company!!

My old boy is just the same, but when mum sold her horse, he was "forced" to stay on his own by default!! We left him and obviously if he really didn't settle, were going to get him a companion, but he did settle...after about a week!!

Only prob now i've got a new horse, he is clingy again, BUT after working on gradually separating them, he is getting better (he will now stand in the stable, whilst the other is led off, for a good 5 mins!!) He has been know to break the stable door down!! We are working on increasing the time we leave him etc!

Hope you get it sorted, i really do know how you feel.
