Hi all As some may recall from yesterday I had to dismiss my groom at short notice for fiddling me. We agreed that her horse who had lived on my yard free gratis would move in the next fortnight to minimise upset and allow me to sort a companion.

Well you guessed it she did the dirty again and moved him this morning so my poor 14hh native mare is alone and very distressed it's an awful thing to do and heartrending to witness.:(

Bransby are trying to help but they have limited options due to ringworm and once I take the horse its a perm loan. I would consider most good to do easy to handle neddies , probbaly not huge horses or highly strung types etc and would provide excellent care and facilities.

Any thoughts appreciated I'm 8 miles from Retford, 4 from Gainsborough , 10 from Scunthorpe and 13 from Doncaster.
 
Bransby are great to loan from if you do decide to go down that route - I have one from them
Have you looked on preloved to see if you could pick up something cheap - if you'll need a companion in the long term?

Thanks all will try them. My mare is from Bransby but they say she will have to go back to them if I don't find a companion pdq. That can never happen as we love her so very much.

Will also try preloved for a shetland.

Try preloved or buy a shetland or youngster dragom driving is good . It would be lovely to take one from the rescue centres but would probably take to long to go through home checks etc.

Hope your mare is ok.
 
I suggest this tentatively - however you could approach the people that are handling Clwyd Davies's horses. Contact Patterdale here, who may be able to point you in their general direction.
 
Could you not take a Brandsby one thats got ringworm but coming out of it if you can do barrier treatment, just so yours can see something else? Perhaps a temp home for one of the youngsters who is RW free?

I'm sure Brandsby will give you time for a companion, after all it does happen that someone loses their 'pair' & they do have compassion :)

Advert today in local feed/tackshops offering (free??) temp accom for someone - somebody with waterlogged field might be glad of it for a couple of weeks or so?
 
Looking on Preloved around Lincs there are at least 3 shetlands for £100 each, not sure what your mares nutritional needs are but if yo udon't restrict her grazing in the summer and you put hay in the field in the winter a shetland may well be a lot of trouble for you as they will have very different management needs
There was a companion ex racehorse on there also - bigger but less hassle in the long run - unless your mare is also a good doer and can be managed similarly to a shetland

Something like this is best bet. Impulse buying at a low level sale could result in disaster. Strangles etc etc.

I am in similar situation following the death of my big boys tiny girlfriend very suddenly. I am muddling through with a cow at present and it is working well.
 
Thanks all I can't see any of the cheap shetties ?? Even looked on dd but nothing suitable near me.Ideally I'd want one about 3 years old so I can break it to ride for my baby nephew when he's ready in a couple of years time. That way it's useful and not just a companion.

Bransby are trying to help but are clear that I need a friend pdq and their options are pure field ornaments.

There is a place not far from me that sells shetlands I may book an appt there tomorrow.

I've tried the local networks and couldn't understand why they were slightly frosty until I found out the groom is saying I just sacked her without notice but she is leaving out the best bit of the story:rolleyes:

Sadly no cows near me (other than the one I sacked) AA or that may be an option :)

Thanks will try that and I will hold my head up I wasn't the one who overcharged for work not carried out and hours not worked.

She looks lovely bless her but it loooks like quite rightly her owner wants a perm home and I want a multi purpose lawnmower.

One of my liveries is trying to place her husbands horse as a companion (although he would also do a light job) due to I'll health. He is 16.1 but has been very easy to o in the to and half years he been here. Horse currently based near Oakham, Rutland, so not a million miles away. I popped down to the nearest horse market and picked up a little shetland for £40!! Admitedly she was full of worms, skinny and covered in lice...but she's fab now! :) she's the most wonderful companion pony!
 
Hi all latest update is I'm still looking.

Unfortunatly lastchancer's sharer has just announced she is leaving so LC needs her new filly as a companion for her own horse. I still have another possibility courtesy of Swilliam but would appreciate a back up plan just in case the gelding doesn't move.

Inchy I wouldn't dare do that lord knows what I'd end up with ... I'm not lucky that way.
 
Would Bransby not give you one of their pure companion ponies for now if you agreed to swap it for a lead rein pony when your grandson is old enough?
Given you already have a relatonship with them the whole home check thing shouldn't take the time that another charity might need.
 
If I was accommodating an urgent need I would arrange to do a home check when the horse/pony was in situ - shouldn't be a bar to rehoming one a.s.a.p., most charities will bend over backward to rehome one of theirs to make room for another
