Where is the best place to look for a companion pony, i have had a look on horsemart, rspca, blue cross but nothing suitable thats not miles away, ideally would like a gelding under 14.2hh.

ILPH? Not sure how close they are to you though?

They have loads of companion horses, actually they don't seem to believe any horse is suitable for riding healthy or not!

That is just not true - I am near to their farm in Norfolk and their aim is to get the horses rehabilitated and trained as riding ponies/horses wherever possible. One of Manchester's police horses is from the WHW (formerly ILPH) and also one that is in the King's Troop. I know several people who have riding horses on loan from them. I think you may be confusing them with Redwings (part of the Horse Trust) who until recently didn't loan any of their horses out at all.

I'm looking on their loan website right now and in Belwade alone there are 2 of the 3 companion horse's that have 'undergone extensive rehabilitation but unfortuantely has failed in proving *it* to be a candidate for a career as a riding horse' This does not mean the horse has ANY physical problems as if this was the case they would say 'unsuitable as a ridden horse due to...'

So basically these horse's just don't fancy getting ridden and therfore get to stand in the field all day eating til their heart is content. I'm sorry but IMO that is NOT a reason to keep a horse as a companion, that is a reason to sell it for meat! (and no I don't suport live export but they could be slaughtered here and sold as froxen burgers on the continent!)

I don't agree with 'unemployment' for any other reason than health issues which is why I do not support the ILPH. If the horse has nothing wrong with it but refuses to work I think they should destroy them, their motto used to be 'Where the horse is used, not abused' or something yet they seem to think healthy horse not being ridden is fine

If you put a wanted ad in any of the main websites (Horsemart, Horsequest), you can specify exactly what you want (sex, temperament, health problems willing to cope with, location of owner, etc.) and you will be inundated with inquiries!

Silverspring - if you read Belwade's ad it actually mentions quote "Bowman (horse) has multi limb lameness and behavioural issues making him not suitable as a riding horse.
How would YOU make him rideable then??!
BTW i have two on loan, one a ridden (yes actually!) and one a companion.

Fair point re Bowman, so that takes the 'unemployed' horses up for loan as companions from 66% to 33% in Belwade, I'm sure the government would be so proud

I also see they have horses that can't be ridden due to poor confirmation, lousy excuse IMO or because they are over the age of 18? I must be commiting an act of cruelty by riding my sound 22 year old 5 days a week when she has been competed her whole life, please don't report me to the ILPH!
