A couple of members have suggested starting a thread for owners either looking for companion ponies or for those of us with horses/ponies looking for companion homes for various reasons. So I'll go first.....

For reasons some of you know, I've made the decision to retire coblet from ridden life, he's 14.1, a coloured cob cross and aged 17 years this spring. We are in Shropshire.

I’m looking for a companion in South Yorkshire, ideally a shetland that respects electric fencing (I have one, I know they exist 🤣🙈)

I would potentially be looking for a companion in spring/ summer.
Ideally around 14hh. No greys. Gelding only. No laminitis, ems, pssm, cushings etc. Pony must be absolutely solid to be left in field or stable whilst I ride horse. Can offer lovely big stable. Turnout 24/7 in summer. Spring and autumn stabled at night, out all day. Winter turnout in mornings. Every need catered for, just not ridden. Would consider quiet youngster, or older retired pony. South lincs based.

This is such a good idea for a thread. The charity I work for has a pair of mini cob geldings available, about 12.2hh and 7 years old in the Scottish Borders. They would be great companions and have lived with mares and geldings of all sizes and ages. They would also be suitable to ride as they have been lightly backed but we just don't have a small enough rider to bring them on. They must go as a pair though as they have been together their whole lives. We re-home all over the UK.

I could supply you with a Highland that doesn’t? (As long as your mud levels are basically zero and there’s no grass either!)
I already have a highland, the respecting fencing rule for companions is to make sure the highland stays in restricted grazing 🙈
Unfortunately I have mud. Large areas of no mud, but also some areas of deep mud :(

While this thread seems like a good idea the forum rules (& admin) are very clear about no advertising of horses for sale/loan/rehoming. It does happen but in a much more covert manner than this thread.

I've not reported it but just a heads up that the thread is likely to disappear if admin catch wind of it. Perhaps better to take note of poster names and pm?

Good point

I'd also urge caution- you may feel like you 'know' people who use the same forum as you, but we're really just all strangers on the internet! There was a horse given away as a companion to a fellow forum member a while ago that ended up being sold on as a riding horse IIRC
This is true but I would expect anyone to do their due diligence. I would expect to be fully vetted and I would fully vet any pony I was interested in. But I suppose we are not all the same.

Best asking rescue centres at least you know what medical issues they may have and also the reassurance if anything goes wrong you get support.

They will also be strangles free and fully up to date with vaccinations, dentist, farrier.

Alas sliding in mud makes his back issues worse & yeah if there’s another Highland he’d definitely team up & cause chaos! Hope you find a mystical fence respecting Shetland!

I think this will be the best route though I know 2 people that got ponies from rescue and they weren't what they thought they were. That's the problem with live animals!!
