Hiya happy New Year. Well i moved my beautiful cob from the competition livery yard to a private yard 2 boxes, 2miles down the road, now have so much time to give him instead of spending that time travelling to and from the livery yard, beautiful hacking, lovely new wooden boxes, beautiful fields (wet at the moment so no turn out) i should be smiling but i am not, my boy is not happy without a horse next to him. He is fine once he is out of the box, walked out for grass and can see horses from other yards around him, ridden out, but when we get to his stable he doesnt want to go in, he is weaving, he is box walking, he is grabbing his food then running to the stable door (i am nearly in tears cos it upsets me so much). So have decided if he needs to have a companion then he shall have one. So my request is all of you out there anyone got a pony that they either need a break from for a few months or that they no longer need/want and it could become my cobs companion. It will need to be able to be lead out whilst i am hacking (3/4 miles a day) because with not being able to turn out until the ground dries up a bit it couldnt stand in the box, wouldnt be fair or right. It would be spoilt and dearly loved.....suggestions anyone, oh yes i am in North Yorkshire by the Middleham moor.

Thanks will have a look at those sites, but always thought there were peeps out there who needed a home for theirs, whilst horses/ponies at the RSPCA at least for now have a home with the RSPCA. Strange really but when i was looking for livery before people i knew couldnt find livery and now that i have found those originally looking are not looking anymore, such is life, but hey will keep options open on all sides, RSPCA/WHW/Private home/Sub let which ever comes first. Thanks for replying.

Why can you not turn out just cos the ground is wet?? It's going to be wet for a good long time, seems a little unfair to have to have your horse in for that amount of time when from what you say it is not enjoying it at all?! Ours our out in the field, yep it's a bit soggy but they're not bothered and the ground soon recovers again come spring/summer. can you not electric fence some of the field off if the worry is the ground will get too torn up by having the horse out? Put him out on a smaller section of it and then that can be rested come spring time?

I find it astounding the amount of people who can't turn horses out as the paddocks afre too wet/muddy etc. It's about management of the grazing.

As for companion horses, either check out horsemart for people looking for loan homes or get on to some of the charities - blue crosss, RSPCA`etc.

You are right, he needs some company, it's pretty tough on many horses to expect them to stay in 24/7 alone. I have a feeling that some charities will be reluctant to loan a pony to a home where there is no turnout when the ground is wet. Can't you sacrifice a bit of your grazing for winter turnout?

please contact blue cross or WHW they are fantastic and are desperate to rehome companions to make space for another deserving horse or pony. They will match you up well.

to answer the many questions, firstly the YO says i cannot turn out, doesnt want the fields messed up while they are wet, i have no problem with turning out but it is not my land......!! So what i have been doing is lead out to the moor beautiful grass for 1 hour then ridden out for 1-2hrs gentle hacking incl stopping for a bit of grass to eat. My cob is naturally a good doer so doesnt need to much grass to add to his waist line but is in after exercise with hay and his usual feed, just cant turn out all day right now. I am in Middleham, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Could you have a nice word with your YO and see if they wil let you fence off a section of the field for the rest of the winter?

Have you asked any of the racing yards near you? I'm sure some of them would have a spare TB that needs some time off? They're not all crazy, and the ones up there are turned out in winter so should be good doers :)

Well sorry but I think the YO then should not have a lovery yard if they are unable to manage the land effectively enough to allow all year turnout. If people can't manage their land or do not have enough land to able to rotate grazing then they should NOT be offering livery in my opinion. Makes no sense to me.

Yes i will put the word out to the racing yards, but it would have to be able to be lead out so it can have some exercise as it couldnt be turned out for the time being. If it is an exracer or something turned out for winter when it sees the gallops it is going to go off its head....ugh....not a pretty site. The stables are private on the YO's land, he has kinda done me a favour so don't want to rock the boat, I was told my cob was used to living on his own before i got him, but seems like he needs a horse in the stable next to him, there are horses around him in the fields but the way his box is facing he cannot see them when he is in his box as they are behind him. Have looked at Blue Cross and WHW, seen a couple i would give a home to, do you think a lil 15yr old shetland gelding it would be too much exercise to hack out mostly walking for 3-4miles a day? Dont want the lil thing to do too much, i am soft very soft. The loan ones i have seen all seem to be down South so have no way of getting to view or if it would be delivered, even saw one with a crooked leg so not good for showing purposes but could hack out unridden but it is in the South, help peeps i am confused about which was to turn. Fields belonging to racing yards will not be let out because of the rules under the Jockey Club about racehorses going with normal horses.

Ask the question, I'm sure there are a lot of Shetties with various charities that would thrive on that kind of activity! So much better for them than vegetating in a field (and steadily expanding about the waistline while they do so;))

Okay i will get hold of the Blue Cross and see what they say, but like another poster said i might not have any like because of turn out right now, will keep you all posted but if anyone else has any ideas or quite solutions please let me know, greatly appreciated, thinking of putting up a hammock in my boys box just to keep him happy, husband wont be too impressed, lol....
