companion pony

what breeds would you say are best suited to being a companion/ light childrens hack ( my daughter is 3 1/2) ?
, im desperate to get a friend for my horse and it would be nice if my daughter could ride it too but need something calm lol, thought about a shetland but ive heard that they can be little b****rs,
any one have any experience with certain breeds, or know of any little ponies wanting a good home ( scottish borders )

any advice would be hugely appreciated

You're right about shetlands, hey dont call them shitelands for nothing!
Horrors for keeping in the paddock, they can get out of anything and reguarly do

I think also if the pony is going to be a companion, you want something thats gonna last a good while and shetlands whilst good weight carriers, dont tend to last long height wise.

We have several lovely section A's at our yard, they are really lovely ponies and take good care of their little riders, and they can last for years. I see kids of 3/4 riding them and 9/10.
All around the 11.2hh mark, which is a little big for a 3 year old, but at that age they tend to start out on the lead reign and kids grow really quickly.
Lots of the native types are great kids ponies, my daughter has an Irish sports pony, they are also fab natured but I dont know what height they start at, ours is 13.1hh so that would be to big but they may breed them much smaller x

Shetlands are hard for kiddies to learn rising trot on too. Not sure about section A's though! Have only ever known one (out of many) that was very reliable as a childs pony - they can be very sharp.

I wouldn't worry too much about breed, but go for something with the right temperament, that is a size that won't be outgrown too quickly.
