companions?

after a long and hard thought i have come to sell my youngster but having two other horses would need a 3rd horse/pony as companion but nothing else dont want to keep youngster as he would just be wasted with me, whats everyones thoughts on getting a shetland as a companion?

I wouldn't! I really need to organise a companion for one of mine, but there's no way I'd have a shetland. They are so hard to contain fencing wise, and of course managing their weight - I speak from experience. Personally I am thinking of a new forrest or something a similar size, although I'm putting it off as I really don't want to be responsible for another horse :o
 
Hi my cobs my world, I have a mini shet and she is brill!
I got her at a 6 months old, just weaned (she is now 2).
Because i have had her from the word go as it were i have had no problems with her at all.
She respects all the electric fencing, she has manners, she doesn't nip, bite or do anything naughty like that at all.
So i would suggest that if you do get one that it be a young one that has not learnt any naughtiness

I have a shetland as a companion for my 2 horses and she stays in field fine normally the youngster who gets out. Doesnt need feeding and only costs me to have feet trimmed every 8 weeks. The other 2 love the shetland as well to play with.
 
Right I'm deeeaaad sad for watching Big Brother, but the other night one of the said "Do you know what the most vicious animal is ...... Shetland Pony" Haha - there is one on our yard and never never never would I have one lol - except maybe for the entertainment value !

I think they are actually hard work too they can not cope with grass at all - you might even end up needing to keep it in during high risk lami times which isn't really the point of a companion

Perhaps one of the charities ??

I have 2 Shetlands as companions for my cob. 3 seems to be the magic number as one is then never left alone. I did have 2 ridden horses. Then lost 1 of the ridden horses and last summer just had 1 shetland and 1 TB. Was fine as I wasn't riding as was pregnant but when I started riding again the Shetland got upset at being left alone so I bought the pony a pony :rolleyes:

Don't have any issues with them - in fact I love them! Our grazing is quite lush and all 3 are good doers so I have my fields topped and the ponies are muzzled from beginning of April to Oct (roughly) and lunged/longlined when I have time to keep their weight down.

I think they are fab but they aren't everyone's cup of tea.
 
I have two shetland ponies as companions and they are great at their job!
Admittedly lami is not an issue with my two as they have such awful teeth they struggle to eat a lot of grass!!
 
I got a free mini shetland as a companion pony, who was totally uncatchable and lamanitic when I got him. He settled in to be a great companion, was never nasty, never tried to escape, just had the keep him well muzzled.

Besides, which male is going to try and escape when he share a field with 2 grey tarts with legs longer than him is tall :D
